Leadership Team Minutes 11-20-08

November 20, 2008

Galileo  Academy of Science & Technology

LEADERSHIP TEAM MEETING
Thursday, November 20,  2008

Nancy called the meeting to order at 10:35am.

I.    Extra Luv Students
–Nancy reported that the counselors are part of the Equity Review Committee.  Each of them has selected 3-4 students to mentor for the school year.  The students have chosen their goals for the semester, are proud they are getting extra attention from the counselors, have high goals (3.0gpa or above), and one has even given a big thank you to the counselor.
–Some of these students are at-risk, so we will wait until next year to move them into Honors programs.
–If these students do go to Honors, they will enter with a sheet that will detail their strengths and challenges.  This will help the teachers serve the students in the classes.  The teacher who refers them to Honors will complete that sheet.
–Nancy asked for questions.

II.    Surveys
–The first week in December the students will complete a survey from ICLE.  The second week in December will be a survey for all staff members that will be done online.
–Joseph asked what the faculty survey is about.  Nancy said it concerns the school climate and teaching and learning issues.
–Ethan asked about the meetings for calendar surveys.  Heather said that not all teachers have received the survey and there is a website.
–Ray explained the 3 options for the survey for the calendar.
–Marti said that at some point we might lose 2 weeks of vacation.  There is no loss of pay.

III.    Balanced Score Card - Matrix
–Zoe presented a demonstration of the Balanced Scorecard Toolkit.  www.beyondthetalk.org is the district website for the Balanced Score Kit.  She mentioned the hard copy document everyone got.
–All of this content should be familiar to everyone.  Zoe demonstrated various parts of the website.  She indicated the website is a good resource.
–The new Matrix has been released.  Zoe compared this one to the old one.  She explained how this matrix works.
–Zoe explained the Benchmark Gap.
–Kathleen asked why some students come directly to Galileo from out of the country while others go to Newcomer.
–Nancy explained that all the students who come to this country take the speaking portion of the CELT test and that can determine where they go.
–Also, some parents do not want their students to go to Newcomer and will go to the superintendent to prevent that.
–Karin said that if they have lots of schooling in other countries and have studied English, they will be sent to a comprehensive high school.
–Right now the Matrix just includes Math and English.
–Ben mentioned the website www.gapminder.org.
–The Matrix is the new form of assessment for the district.

–Balanced Score Card
–Zoe distributed information on the Balanced Score Card that will be distributed at the December Faculty Meeting.  We will continue talking about Equitable Student Achievement.

IV.    December Faculty Meeting
–This will be on Dec. 2nd.  The faculty meeting will take the whole 2 hours.  There will be no WASC meetings then.
–Please read the BSC notes before the faculty meeting.  Zoe explained the notes and indicated what to look for.

V.    Dec. 4th Leadership Team Training
–This will be held in the Presidio.  Zoe showed a map.  This workshop will begin at the beginning of 4th period and will continue until 3pm.  Coverage for 6th period classes will be arranged.
–Jennifer Abrams will work with us on the outcomes of the strategic plan.  This will include making this specific to each department.

VI.    WASC
–We still have not recruited teachers to be trained on the WASC process.

VII.    3rd Tuesday CPI Collaboration
–Ray indicated this is a WASC issue.  We said this is a part of our WASC plan. This is the Tuesday that our Special Ed. teachers will attend regular department meetings.  Ray thanked Marti and Kathleen for their help.  Please let Ray know when your departments meet.
–Ray said his teachers can learn what each department is doing so that his department can match curriculum.
–Also they will be available to answer questions about problems with students, etc.  His teachers would also like to help.
–Nancy said that for the SAP meetings, she would like some Special Ed. personnel to attend for assistance.

VIII.    Changes to AOIT for 2009-2010 School Year
–AOIT will change, as some classes taught by Hank Machtay will be in a separate pathway.   AOIT will continue with the interdisciplinary collaboration.
–We need another teacher to instruct technology.  If you know teachers who would like to be part of this cross-curricular cohort program, let him know.  AOIT is in a period of transition.
–Digital Arts Media will be the name of Mr. Machtay’s program.

IX.    NAF Design Studio visit in March
–The National Academy Foundation oversees many of the academy programs.  We will host 30 teachers and administrators who will observe what we are doing.  This will be 2 days in March.  They will also give us feedback about what they see when they come to our school.

X.    Calendar for Computer Labs
–George said that the teachers are having a hard time with the calendar scheduling.  Please email George if you are having problems.  Ben will also work with teachers on how to schedule.
–Marti asked how many teachers use the computer to schedule.  No one knows.

XI.    Technology Budget Update
–Marti gave an update on what we are doing.
–She mentioned some projectors and what we can do in the future.
–There is now a process in place now for discussion prior to purchasing.  This will expedite our orders.
–This means also that we will be getting a good discount for the large orders.
–We are spending $85,000 out of equipment.

XII.    Lost Book Letters
–Michael suggested sending out Lost Book Letters at the end for the first semester.  This will simplify the process and hopefully bring in a better return.  These letters can include what has already been lost.
–Nancy said that this year one of the graduation sign-out requirements will be for the students to complete the survey about where they are going next year.  Last year 13% of the students did not complete the survey.  This brought our number going to college down from 96% - 88%.  Requiring all seniors to complete the survey will make our numbers more accurate.
–Ethan suggested not releasing transcripts until textbooks are returned.

XIII.    Miscellaneous
–Karin reported on the 11/14 Gala.  The PTSA parents worked really hard and they raised $9,000.
–Karin invited everyone to stop by 210 during 2nd period on Fridays to meet the prospective parents and the students who are here to view the school.
–Marilyn Hubbard talked about the new parking area in the old tennis court area.  Please put your Galileo tag in the window.  The parking places are all marked with stripes.
–See Joni for a parking tag.
–Ethan mentioned that the gates to the area were not locked over the weekend.
–Marilyn Hubbard will take care of getting the gates open and locked.
–A sign will be placed up saying:  STAFF ONLY–all others will be towed.
–Nancy reminded everyone to turn in their attendance strips.

Meeting adjourned at 11:35am.
