Leadership Team Meeting Minutes 12-11-08

Galileo Academy of Science & Technology
LEADERSHIP TEAM MEETING
Thursday, December 11, 2008
Vicki called the meeting to order at 10:35am.
I. Principal’s Remarks
–Vicki reminded the group to put away papers, cell phones, etc.
–Vicki told the group that we received $625,000 from a federal grant for Galileo for technology. Margaret Chiu is partly responsible for this.
–There is a directive to give us all the money as soon as possible and they will have a meeting with our team about the mandatory audit due to the large amount of money.
–The auditor will work with us on the School wide Plan to meet the conditions of the money.
–Karin Lau will manage the money and the compliance issues that come along with the funds.
–Vicki talked about discussion at the SSC meeting last night and concerns of some of the teachers. They were concerned that these funds might impact the teaching load at the school. We will talk to the district about the time frame for spending the money, maintaining the systems, etc.
–There could be more funds available later if we manage the funds well. These funds are targeted for the EDY students. We will tie all this together to meet the guidelines. There are several ways we can work this out school wide but still meet the EDY criteria.
–We will find out if this money can go towards our current technology orders.
–George recalled past episodes of having to separate equipment for only EDY students. He said how hard it was to manage.
–Karin said she would have to look into the percentage of our students who are EDY. The criteria have changed.
II. Second Semester Class Changes
–Nancy asked for the names of students who dept. heads felt should be moved out of honors, into honors, etc.
–Changes for the math department will be done after we know a student has failed.
–Daphne asked about when items the school board passes take affect. She was referring to open enrollment for honors and AP classes. Vicki said this would take affect in the fall. A-G changes also take affect in the fall. New graduation requirements will go in for class of 2014.
–Vicki said we could set pre-requisites in some areas.
–Michael asked about the students who are getting re-classified. Some will be placed in regular classes if there is room.
–Michael asked if we could still do our regular placement tests and Vicki said we could.
–Marti suggested we set up a better communication system with the parents. She gave an example of giving the first assignment to a student who is requesting a higher-level class to see if they could handle the material.
–May 30th was the date selected for the placement tests.
–Vicki asked Michael about the summer reading list.
–Nancy asked if it would be possible to give the placement tests the first few days of school. Discussion followed and it was decided it would be better prior to the start of school.
–Vicki mentioned that in Round #3 of school assignments, in July, we pick up 150 students that will not have taken the placement tests.
–Academy/Pathway Fair will be scheduled soon. Ben said he was not sure if the students really learned about the pathways at that event.
–Discussion followed as to how to get the information to the 9th graders. Marilyn suggested G-House to reach all 9th grade classes at once.
III. January Presentations of Department Goals
–These presentations are in the schedule. This may take the whole meeting time.
–Marti suggested a time frame for each presentation. This will be discussed prior to the meeting.
–Vicki talked about presentation of diplomas to Ken, Jeff and Carmen from the construction company.
–On the January 20th Staff Development Day, it is mandated that everyone watch the inauguration of the new president. The teacher’s union felt it was not right to have teachers off site and not allowed to watch this historical event.
–Everyone will have to be at our site and all other notices for training off campus should be disregarded.
–Finals are tentatively scheduled for 1/13, 1/14 and 1/15. We will see if we can use minimum days. 1/16 will be make-ups.
–First day of the semester will be a Wednesday block and we will begin with homeroom and then the blocks.
IV. Essential kills & Knowledge Updates
–Please stop by and see Peter about where you are and what you are doing. An example is department norms. He is keeping sheets in his office as new information comes in.
V. Curriculum Display Boards–Class Project & Student Work
VI ELD Training
–The training is complete. We have identified 7 priorities. There will be more to come.
VII. New Graduation Requirements
–New graduation requirements come into affect for the class that enters Galileo in Fall 2010.
–Daphne asked if our school district could over ride the state requirements. Our superintendent wants Economics and American Democracy out of the senior year courses and include those curriculums with US History in the 11th grade.
–The requirement for Social Studies would be reduced from 3 years to 2 years.
–The new calendar would take affect in August 2010. The superintendent has 3 new calendar proposals.
–There will be a meeting with the superintendent and the principals and UBC reps to discus this.
–Ray asked when we would go to year round. Vicki said the superintendent does not want to do this.
VIII. Teacher Parking Lot Update
–Daphne asked what the parking situation is for handicapped teachers.
–Bettie suggested having the Bay Street door open earlier.
–Vicki suggested asking Rosemarie if she would let Jimmy Lui move her car after she parks to a more convenient place.
–There is lumber in two spaces in our new parking lot.
–Denise mentioned cars in the handicapped spaces with no handicapped placards.
–Discussion followed as to where the handicapped access is.
–Ethan said there are garbage cans that need to be emptied.
–Marilyn asked everyone to email her if his or her rooms are not clean.
IX. Miscellaneous
–Marti talked about Document Cameras and said we could have some demonstrations next week. Basically it is like an opaque projector with a camera and it enlarges items on the screen. This could be next Tuesday or Wednesday.
–Marti asked for ideas on who would like this and when we could schedule demonstrations.
–Daphne asked how we could pay for this. It could come out of technology. Two teachers have ordered these. Cost is around $700 with a flexible arm.
–Marti distributed a technology plan that was done prior to Galileo getting the $625.000.
–Karin mentioned that we can do mid-year budget transfers.
–Ray reminded everyone that Special Ed. teachers will join regular dept. meetings on Tuesday.
–Daphne mentioned that next Thursday 12/18, the Social Committee and Wellness will provide morning treats for a Holiday send-off.
–Denise mentioned the TV in 466 is not working.
–George suggested we wait until we get the $625,000 and see what we can shift over to those funds to free up our funds for other projects.
–Ethan asked if funds are available for non-technical items. If so, how do we go about ordering these items? He explained that Prop H funds cannot be spent on the facility.
–Ethan was asked to develop his needs list.
–Denise mentioned there is no Internet wireless on the 4th floor. Daphne said she did not have it on the 3rd floor. Vicki said this is part of the new technology plan to have it through the whole building.
–Ray mentioned that no orders for supplies were submitted this year. He does get funds from Special Ed that he has used this year. Next year he will not have those funds.
Meeting adjourned at 11:50am.
