In addition, master rolls and ink are very costly. DO NOT use the risograph machine if the Original has dark photos/pictures or dark borders. Do not change any machine supplies if you don’t know how. Please see Joni or Bounmy if you need an inservice. Thank you for your cooperation. Joni/Room206

Leadership Team Meeting Minutes 2/12/09
February 12, 2009
Galileo Academy of Science & Technology
LEADERSHIP TEAM MEETING
Thursday, February 12, 2009
Vicki called the meeting to order at 10:35am.
I. Principal’s Remarks
–Our agenda today is short, please turn off cell phones, etc. and be focused on the meeting.
–Vicki discussed our student capacity for next year. We plan to be at 2150. She mentioned that Margaret Chiu suggested we have a lower number but this involves our funding. We will stay at 2150. We do not know if EPC will give us this or a higher amount. We do not was to lose $180,000 like we did last year.
–We will probably have 575 freshmen.
–98.9% tested for CAHSEE. 99% of Spec. Ed. tested. We did make phone calls to get the students in for the testing.
–Mike brought up the fact that 400 teachers would be given layoff notices.
The superintendent said they would send the notices and the mayor said he would kick in the rainy day funds and rescind the layoffs.
–Vicki also said the superintendent said they would look at administrative contracts and perhaps do some cuts in that area.
–Last year the list of layoffs did include tenured teachers.
–Ethan mentioned that with the state and city budgets a lot is happening.
–George asked if the Professional Development days will be dropped next year. Vicki said it has not been decided yet.
II. GPA’s
–Nancy distributed information on the GPA’s of the AA, and Latino students.
–Nancy directed everyone to the GPA’s for the first grading period and then look at the final grades for the semester for the Spanish-speaking students.
–The most important thing to notice is the first grading period and the final grading periods. The trend is not as drastic for the AA.
–It appears that students are dropping their GPAs after the first grading period, both for AA and Spanish speaking students.
–Nancy said historically the first 6 weeks of school is getting used to school and being back. Marti said in Math their courses get more difficult after the first 6 weeks.
–Nancy said the transition students who are socially promoted to high school are AA or Latino. Some try hard, but often they end up with low GPAs. There are 50 ninth graders who have these low GPAs.
–Marti mentioned that many incoming AA and Latino students have low STAR scores in Math when they come to Galileo. Some students are learning, but no enough to bring up the scores and the GPA.
–Ray said that we need to teach to the students. Some students continue to rise, but in the same class, some drop. Do teachers deal with this? We need to work with these students.
–Marti asked how the ELL students do in English and Social Studies with the textbooks. Kathleen discussed the various levels and what reading class these students are enrolled in.
–Ray mentioned the importance of differentiated learning and gave some examples of how to do this with some students.
–We have 197 Spanish-speaking students in the school.
–We have 120 AA students in the school.
–2,074 is our current student population.
–Nancy asked what else the group would like to know about this information and what would the group like to do.
–Kathleen wanted to know what percentage of the students are cutting.
–Denise would like to know why are they cutting–home problems, class work too difficult, etc.
–Ben suggested we look at their STAR scores for each year. Does each group differ upon entering, or are we actually making a difference in what we do in the classroom.
–Nancy said by the 12th grade, those AA or Latino students who do not have a high GPA have left Galileo.
–Ray suggested Nancy look at a cohort or two and view their history.
–Marti would like to see 9th grade STAR scores of AA and Latino students.
–Ben would like to see the progression of grades for all students over the course of the semester or year.
–Karin has a list of GATE students and those with a GPA of 3.5 or above. She passed the information around for the group to look at.
–Nancy asked the group where do we go from here?
–Ray thought Ben’s idea of looking at the cohorts and see if they differ.
–Michael asked if any of this correlates with the sports seasons.
–Ben suggested comparing the snapshots from each year.
–Nancy felt the numbers are a little better this year than last year and she feels that we had more Spanish speaking students last year.
–How many of these students are being seen by Susan English-James?
–Marti asked if each of the students on Nancy’s list is receiving some sort of support. Where are they being supported?
–Susan talked about some of the students and teachers she deals with. She encourages the teachers to call the parents.
–Peter suggested we look at what kind of support the high achievers have so we can try the same things with the under achievers.
–Kathleen suggested some peer mentoring or support group.
–Kathleen asked for the GATE criteria. Karin said that their GPA must be 3.0.
–Nancy said that GATE does not always have to be scholastic. They can also be artistic or athletic. It is helpful to know what identifies each student as GATE.
–Nancy asked if the group would be comfortable sharing this with their department members once it is revised.
–Ben suggested including the same data for the general school population.
–We are not able to pull up all the data we want from our district files. We are dealing with rudimentary systems and data we want is not always currently available to us.
–The Balanced Score Card will help identify the data we need.
III. Honors Classes
–Nancy said that the superintendent is creating a policy that any student next year who wants to take honors and AP classes can do it.
–How do we prepare teachers for this and maintain diversity and have students who continue successfully in the classes is a challenge.
–In the Math Dept. teachers are trying to show the students what they need to know to enter higher classes and what they need to know to be successful. She said that in her department there are not that many students who are not prepared for honors or AP classes who try to get in them.
–Vicki said we will have summer school and some of the students can take this math help.
–Vicki asked Michael how we would handle this in English. Testing is in place now that helps identify where students should be placed.
–Nancy mentioned students coming into an honors class, not as an honors student, but they come up to the challenge and then leave as honors students.
–Nancy mentioned pre-honors classes in English and History in the 9th and 10th grades. Michael gave some examples from what he and his department have done.
-Daphne said Rosemarie Langley was thinking about a geography class in the 9th grade to prepare them for Modern World AP.
–Nancy asked Michael and Daphne if they would work on this and discussion followed on if we will test the incoming 9th graders.
–Marti said her department is used to moving students from one level to another to meet the skills of the students.
–Denise gave examples from her classes where she has both regular and honors students in the same class. She can move them back and forth depending on how they are doing. She asked about the standards for honors, etc.
–Kathleen suggested using cluster meetings to discuss these issues.
IV. Spring Open House
–Wednesday, May 13th is the date.
–Denise mentioned that not many parents attend. She questions the idea of the event.
–Vicki said that this resembles the community meetings that are not very well attended.
–Incoming 9th graders can attend this event.
–Vicki said perhaps this event needs to be restructured.
–Karin suggested a tour of the school for the new students.
–Daphne reminded the group that last year it began in the courtyard.
–Michael suggested we work on a schedule for the incoming parents meeting with department heads, and not all the teachers.
–Vicki suggested an academic theme for the community meetings to draw more participants.
–Nancy said the graduation requirements are changing and we could present that to the incoming parents as well.
V. Miscellaneous
–Graduation will be at AT & T Park. Rehearsal will be June 5th. Graduation is on June 8th at noon (until 2pm).
–We need to work on the final exam schedule.
–The AT & T people are strict about the time.
–Vicki will do a walk through prior to graduation.
–Each school is paying $8300.00.
–Lowell and Lincoln are not bringing any of their musicians, but we want to include ours.
–Graduation will be different this year.
–We will have to find out about rain and how it will affect the ceremony.
–Parking will be in AT & T Ballpark A lot.
–Michael asked about the Bank of America awards. Vicki said they will still do the certificates, but there will be no monetary awards. We will ask Candace or Josephine. Michael wondered if we would want to participate.
–Joseph said he talked to his department about their ideas for which students should receive the department honors and Bank of America awards.
–Marti thanked everyone for returning the surveys. She apologized for 2 #38’s. She will be emailing everyone about their needs.
–Vicki will call people if layoff letters do come.
Meeting adjourned at 12:00pm.
