SUMMERFUND

 

Allison Chen will go to a writing program at Smith College, Sandy Jiang will study wolves and moose on a backpacking trip in Michigan’s upper peninsula, Candy Luo has been selected as a Student Ambassador representing San Francisco in Osaka, Japan and Juan Avila will be spending five weeks at Stanford with the Stanford Medical Youth Science Program!  That’s just a taste of what our students will be doing this summer. SUMMERFUND is about opportunity, exposure and access for Galileo students.

Please  encourage students to find out about the many summer programs that are still available.  Deadlines vary but they are approaching.  SUMMERFUND will be open THIS WEEK on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, Room 458A.

PARKING COURTESY:  Please do not block other cars in both the Bay Street and the Polk Street parking lots.  If you have to block a car, do it only for a few minutes and leave your Galileo Parking Hanger in plain sight in your car.  If you do not have a Galileo Parking Hanger, see Bettie Grinnell in the Main Office.                                       Mrs. Grinnell

STUDENTS

ASB STORE in Room 150  is selling healthy snacks, beverages, sweatshirts, new drawstring day packs, hand towels, lanyards, book covers, pens, pennants, mugs, and other spirit items during lunch time and after school. Money helps to pay for our school activities.

ASB STORE is selling ASB card stickers @ $5.00. Discounts are given for dances, sweatshirts, yearbook, and other spirit items.

GRADUATION: is Wednesday, May 28 at Bill Graham’s Auditorium at 1 PM.

 

Are you looking for a job or summer internship? Lots of applications are up on the Wellness Center’s website, galileoweb.org/wellness and click on “Programs and Internships”. There are applications Oasis for Girls, Project WHAT!, jobs for high school students, and more.

TRAVEL?  To Central America? To Nicaragua? There will be a presentation after school on Tuesday, May 20  in room 458.  Hear about community service and cultural immersion trips in June and July. No Spanish required but here’s your chance to learn the language. Learn about a life-changing opportunity  on Tuesday, May 20th after school in Room 458.

 

Make Music!  Make Sounds…and maybe make some money, too! You can learn all aspects of digital music production and sound design basics for video games and digitsl video FOR FREE.  After a 4 week afternoon program at the Bay Area Video Coalition, you could hook up for a paid internship!  Get more info at SUMMERFUNd in Room 458A…open after school next week on Tuesday and Thursday!  Don’t wait…this program begins Monday, June 2nd!!

Have you ever wanted to create and produce an original play?  Do you want to perform?  Direct? Prepare for an audition?  The Magic Theatre in nearby Fort Mason has a high school program for all grades.  SUMMERFUNd can help you with your application and fundraising.  Room 458A next week on Tuesday and Thursday..

 

GIRLS ONLY!  Why aren’t more girls interested in orthopedics?  What is the relationship between engineers and orthopedic surgeons?  Here’s your opportunity to find out in a ONE Day program at San Francisco General Hospital.  It’s not until Saturday, August 23 but you apply to the Perry Outreach Program now to reserve your spot!  This FREE program fills quickly.  Meet women doctors, women med students and women engineering students!  Do it now!  Check in with SUMMERFUND after school today, Room 458A.

 

COLLEGE & CAREER

For 11th:

If you are interested in being nominated for a $30,000 scholarship for the University of Rochester, please let Ms. S. Chan know.  This is a competitive private university in upstate (Rochester), New York.  It has around 5,000 undergraduate students.  It is well known for liberal arts and science research.

For 11th Female Students:

Smith College in a top liberal arts women’s college in the States.  It is located in Massachusetts and it has about 2,500 students.  They offer The Women of Distinction program for high school seniors who is curious about this college.  This is a free fly in program.  Application deadline is 8/1/14.  Your transcript is required so if you’re interested in applying, be sure to get a copy of your transcript before the semester ends.  To apply:   https://www.smith.edu/admission/wod/

For 12th:

If you’re 18-24 years old and would like to make positive contributions to our communities, AmeriCorps and FEMA are great options to consider.  Both of these programs provide room and board, a living stipend, and a $5500 educational stipend for any colleges.  Application deadline is 6/1/14.  If you’re interested, please talk to Ms. S. Chan or check out: www.NationalService.gov

Please remember to complete the Senior Exit Survey on line.  The Final Transcript Request Form and Senior Clearance Form will be passed out in homeroom and you need to complete and return them to your guidance counselor.

An updated scholarship list and summer program list have been sent via School Loop and they are posted on Galileo’s website and on the designated boards in or around the Counseling Center.
