WINTER CONCERT with Jest Jammin Celebrating 95 Years (1921 – 2016) of Galileo in the Galileo Auditorium on Saturday, Jan. 30 starting at 6:30 PM. Tickets sold at door – adult $20 & student $10. Proceeds will go to Galileo extracurricular activities.

For 9th, 10th, 11th, & 12th:

1/12/16 @ 1:30pm @ RM 157: Air Force Academy Info. Presentation: Air Force ROTC is a four year in-college program that allows students to earn a college degree while simultaneously earning a commission as an Air Force Officer.  This program also offers the opportunity for students to earn scholarships to pay for college. Through Air Force ROTC, students will learn valuable skills such as leadership and time-management which will prepare them for a lifetime of success.  If you need a pass to attend this presentation, please ask Ms. S. Chan.

1/13/16 @ 11:45am-12:25pm @ RM 104: ACE Mentor Program Info.: ACE is dedicated to mentoring high school students and inspiring them to pursue careers in design and construction. The program is run by architects, engineers, city planners and project managers. These mentors meet with a group of students each week and present important topics related to the industry. Throughout the course of 14 weeks, students will collaboratively work on a real life project from planning to design. The project will involve model making, drawing and design thinking. We also go on field trips to construction sites and bring in various professionals.

This is a perfect program for any student that might be interested architecture, engineering and construction management. It will give them the chance to speak with professionals and get a since for what happens in the industry on a day to day basis.

1/14/16 @ 9am @ RM 452: Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), NY: One of New York City’s premier public institutions, FIT is an internationally recognized college for design, fashion, art, communications, and business. It is known for its’ rigorous, unique, and adaptable academic programming, experiential learning opportunities, academic and industry partnerships, and commitment to research, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

If you want to attend this presentation and need a pass to be out of class, please ask Ms. S. Chan in the College & Career Center for a pass or attend the next one which is at lunch time on 1/15 in room 104.

1/16/16 @ 12pm-4pm @ California College of the Arts, 1111 8th St, San Francisco: National Portfolio Day: This is a free event specifically for visual artists and designers. It is an opportunity for those who wish to pursue an education in the visual and related arts to meet with representatives from colleges accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.  Representatives will be available to review your artwork, discuss their programs and answer questions about professional careers in art.  High school students, parents, teachers, guidance counselors and college transfer students are encouraged to attend.  For more details: http://www.portfolioday.net/portfolio-day-faqs

1/19/16 @ 12:20pm-1pm @ Courtyard: Pathways Career Ahead Program: Enterprise for High School Students will be launching the next cycle of their Pathways Career Ahead Program – starting Tuesday, February 16th, 2016! If you want to explore a career path, be trained in job skills, and find paying jobs, then attend the tabling session to sign up for an Information Session.

For 9th, 10th, & 11th:

1/13/16 @ 5:30pm @ Cafeteria: Junior Year Prep & the New SAT: We have invited an educational consultant from La Porte College Advising to talk about what juniors can do to get ready for the senior year and what is the new SAT really about.  This is open to all parents and students.  Cantonese and Spanish translation will be provided.  Light dinner will be provided.

 

For 10th, 11th, & 12th:

Project Pull Intern: this is a paid summer internship program that is sponsored by the City & County of SF.  Interns work 20 hours per week and get $13 per hour.  It will be from 6/13/16-8/5/16.  Interns will be paired with a mentor.  Students need to have a min. 2.75 GPA from last semester and must commit for the whole program.  Application deadline is 2/29/16.

For 11th & 12th:

1/14/16 @ 10:05am @ RM library: SF Achievers Scholarship Info. Meeting:  This is a community-based non-profit organization providing college scholarships and mentoring services to African-American male high school students (in 11th & 12th grade) in the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD).  For more info. on this organization or scholarship: http://www.sfachievers.org/about-us/

If you meet this criteria, please come to this meeting.  If you need a pass to miss class, please ask either Mr. Harper, Ms. Marshman, Ms. G., or Ms. S. Chan in the Counseling Center.

1/20/16 @ 2:15pm-4:15pm @ RM 104: CCSF Info. & Application Workshop: If you want to take class this summer or next fall at CCSF, please attend this one and only CCSF info. and application workshop.  And sign up for the placement exam on 2/10 at CCSF with your counselor or with Ms. S. Chan or with Vicki in room 209.

Do you want a paid internship with a local nonprofit organization (for 8 weeks) as well as the Student Leaders summit in Washington, D.C. in July 2016 (for one week with all expenses paid.)  From this program, you will gain leadership skills.  Application deadline is 1/29/16.  Apply soon and see Ms. S. For 11th:

If you have registered for the ACT prep class, be sure to report to the first day of class on 1/13 @ 2:30pmin either room 153 or 154.  You can bring snacks and water since the class will last for 2 hours.

 

For 12th:

1/13/16 @ 2:15pm-4:15pm @ RM 104:  Meritus College Fund App. Workshop: This is a generous scholarship for seniors: if you meet the following criteria, come check it out and work on the application today:

  • Unweighted GPA between 3.0 – 3.7 (we will consider students slightly outside of this range)
  • Demonstrated Financial Need (majority of our students are on Free/Reduced Lunch)
  • Plan to attend a 4-year University

1/14/16 @ 2:15pm-5pm @ RM 104: FAFSA ID Set Up: Seniors must create a FAFSA ID before they can submit the FAFSA.  Please come to this one time workshop to get it set up.  It will take 10-15 minutes only and if you have a social security number, please bring it.  If you don’t have a social security number, you can still come and we will help you.

If you need to order an official transcript for college or for scholarship reason, please complete a transcript request form.  You can pick up a copy of this form from room 209, the counseling center or the college & career center.  Please allow at least two days for processing.

Please check out the scholarship posting in the Counseling Center or from last week’s announcements. There are quite a few scholarship opportunities for you already.  Don’t miss deadlines!
