WORD OF THE WEEK: All Teachers please put this word on your blackboard or other prominent place. LUNAR NEW YEAR: HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR–THE YEAR OF THE MONKEY!! Lunar New Year falls on Monday and marks the beginning of the Year of the Monkey. Also called Chinese New Year, or the Spring Festival, the holiday is steeped in layers of myths and traditions. It is celebrated in many countries throughout Asia, including Japan, Korea, and Vietnam, and in other parts of the world where people with Asian heritage have settled. It is a time for families to come together to eat good food and participate in cultural traditions. Here’s what you need to know about this celebration.

PARKING COURTESY:  Please do not block other cars in both the Bay Street and the Polk Street parking lots.  If you have to block a car, do it only for a few minutes and leave your Galileo Parking Hanger in plain sight in your car.  If you do not have a Galileo Parking Hanger, see Bettie Grinnell in the Main Office.    Mrs. Grinnell




ASB STORE: in room 150 is selling the popular Galileo planners. Cost is $1.00

with a current ASB card sticker.


BOAT DANCE: is Saturday night, March 12. Go to Pier 41 at 7:00 PM. Must bring ID Photo card. Discount tickets sold this Friday, Feb. 12 in room 403.


SPIRIT WEEK FOOD FESTIVAL; is Friday, March 11. Clubs must submit their food proposal at ECM by Feb. 29.


GALILEO’S 95th BIRTHDAY:Celebrating Galileo’s birthday, Feb. 15 by having an Egg Drop Contest on Friday, Feb. 19. in the Courtyard during lunch time.

2/13/16 @ 9am-5pm @ Oakland Marriott City Center: 13th Annual Black College Expo: Scholarship opportunities for all students, seminars and one-on-one interviews with -colleges & universities, $8 entrance fee per person. www.thecollegeexpo.org or call 877-427-4100.

3/4/16: application deadline for Vietnamese Student Association’s (VSA) 4 day VISION program at UC Berkeley from 4/7-4/10.  Room & board and round trip BART tickets to Berkeley will be included.  This year’s theme is Acknowledge Connect & Empower (A.C.E): workshops on how to empower ourselves and the community.  Network with other high school students. The Summer Program List is now available.  Please either check it out on the wall outside of room 255 or via SchoolLoop with the weekly College & Career Center Announcements. Programs that have a cost may provide financial aid for students in need but you should apply for these programs ASAP.

For 10th, 11th, & 12th:

Project Pull Intern: this is a paid summer internship program that is sponsored by the City & County of SF.  Interns work 20 hours per week and get $13 per hour.  It will be from 6/13/16-8/5/16.  Interns will be paired with a mentor.  Students need to have a min. 2.75 GPA from last semester and must commit for the whole program.  Application deadline is 2/29/16.  Apply online: https://jcycworkforce.formstack.com/forms/projectpull2016application


For 11th:

2/11/16 @ 2:15pm @ RM 104:Genesys Works: Are you interested in receiving a paid internship, support with college applications, FAFSA and scholarships during your senior year? Come to learn more about Genesys Works!

Applicants should be:

·         On track to graduate – talk to your counselor if you are unsure

·         Committed to 8 weeks of training from June – August

·         Able to work in the afternoons senior year

·         Eligible to work in the United States

Students Rising Above (SRA): This is a free scholarship and mentorship opportunity just for juniors.  Are YOU a student who is “rising above?”  If so, submit the following application.  The application deadline is March 4, 2016.  Link to the application:http://studentsrisingabove.org/students/

Qualified students will meet the following criteria:

◾High School JUNIOR (who will graduate from high school in Spring 2017)

◾From a low-income family

◾Demonstrated strength of character in overcoming obstacles not of his/her own making

◾Committed to earning a four-year college degree

◾Maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher

◾Highly recommended by a teacher, counselor, or mentor

◾Willing to share personal story

◾Live within the nine-county Bay Area

If you have registered for the ACT prep class, be sure to report to class on Wednesday @ 2:30pm in either room 153 or 154. You can bring snacks and water since the class will last for 2 hours.

For 12th:

2/10/16 @ 7:45am @ Francisco St. gate: CCSF Placement Exam @ CCSF: SFUSD will provide a bus to CCSF so that students can do the placement exam on the campus, orientation and a campus tour.  Lunch will be provided. Students will be dismissed from the CCSF campus at 2pm-3pm.  You must have submitted a CCSF online application and a signed permission slip to Ms. S. Chan in order to join this field trip.  If you have any questions, please talk to Ms. S. Chan as soon as possible.

2/11/16 deadline for The Association of Chinese Teacher (TACT) Scholarship application.  Please feel free to pick up a copy of the application from the College & Career Center or download it online.

2/17/16 & 2/18/16 @ 2:15pm @ RM 104: Financial Aid Application Workshop: Complete the FAFSA or CA Dream Act if you want to financial support for college related costs.  We can help you with any questions you may have on the application.  If you have either the 2014 or 2015 Income Tax Return, bring a copy with you.

3/2/16 FAFSA & CA Dream Act priority deadline: if you want to receive any type of financial aid, you have to submit either the FAFSA or CA Dream Act by this date.

If you need to order an official transcript for college or for scholarship reason, please complete a transcript request form. You can pick up a copy of this form from room 209, the counseling center or the college & career center.  Please allow at least two days for processing.
