WORD OF THE WEEK: FINAL EXAMS:  Final examination, annual, exam, “final interview” or final is a test given to students at the end of a course of study or training. Although the term can be used in the context of physical training, it most often occurs in the academic world. Most middle schools, high schools, colleges, and universities run final exams at the end of a particular academic term, typically a quarter or semester, or more traditionally at the end of a complete degree course. Some institutions designate a “study week” or “reading period” between the end of instruction and the beginning of finals, during which no examinations may be administered. Students at many institutions know the week before finals as “dead week.” Most final exam incorporate the reading material that has been assigned throughout the term.

MOTHER’S DAY

WORD OF THE WEEK: All Teachers please put this word on your blackboard or other prominent place.  MOTHER’S DAY:  Mother’s Day is a celebration honoring the mother of the family, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society.   It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in the months of March or May. It complements similar celebrations honoring family members, such as Father’s Day and Siblings Day.

The modern holiday of Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother at St Andrew’s Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia. Today St Andrew’s Methodist Church now holds the International Mother’s Day Shrine. Her campaign to make “Mother’s Day” a recognized holiday in the United States began in 1905, the year her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, died. Ann Jarvis had been a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the American Civil War, and created Mother’s Day Work Clubs to address public health issues. Anna Jarvis wanted to honor her mother by continuing the work she started and to set aside a day to honor all mothers, because she believed that they were “the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world”.

In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother’s Day, held on the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honor mothers. Jarvis’ holiday was adopted by other countries, and it is now celebrated all over the world.

Camp Sudo’s SF 2016 Summer Code Camp will be at Galileo Academy.  This camp will cover basic computer coding, designing, building and managing your own websites & projects.  The camp will be from 8am-2pm from 6/8/16-7/13/16. The cost will be $1,000 (including a laptop for you plus all programming material, transportation and snacks); limited need-based scholarship will be available and will cover up to 75% of the tuition cost.  You can pick up a copy of the application from your counselor or from the College & Career Center in room 258F.  Application deadline is 5/13 to Dr. Reimer’s office which is next to the main office.

For juniors only.  Are you interested in going to either University of Puget Sound (PS) for tuition free (which is about $46,000 per year for 4 years) or Boston University (BU) for tuition free (which is about $49,000 per year for 4 years) while getting special advising support and leadership training?  PS is known for international business, music, biology, and strong liberal arts.  This is a small independent college in Tacoma, Washington.  BU is a large private research college in Boston, MA.  If you’re interested in being nominated for this scholarship, please tell Ms. G by May 12 and give her your current contact information.

2016 Filipino-American HS Graduating Scholars’ Award: If you are a Filipino-American seniors and have a weighted GPA of 3.0 or higher, please apply for this scholarship.  It’s an easy application and the deadline has extended to May 9, 2016. Pick up the application either in the College & Career Center or from the Advisor Hub in room 209.

Chinese American Citizen Alliance Scholarship for $1,000: applicant must be Chinese ancestry, graduate from SFUSD, has a 3.0 minimum GPA, has done community service, and must meet income eligibility.  Application deadline is 5/10/2016.
