OPENING DAY SPRING SEMESTER:  The sehedule for the day will begin with Homeroom, where studentes will pick up their class schedules for the Spring Semester.  Homeroom will run from 8:00am – 8:30am.  Check your email for the schedule for Tuesday, January 3, 2017.

ASB CARD STICKERS: are sold at ASB office (room 150) @ $5.00. Discount for dances, sweatshirts, lanyards, & other school spirit items.

 

ASB STUDENT STORE: in room 150 is selling healthy drinks, snacks, hand towels, mugs,  poms poms, and other school spirit items.

 

STUDENT ID CARDS: Our Student ID Card software has been updated with the latest student pictures and is now up and running. If you know any current students or new/transfer students in need of an ID card, please direct them to Ms. Rivera in the Counseling office (258E), where our ID printer is located.

For any new/transfer students, first ID card is free of charge. All replacement ID cards will cost $2.

 

COLLEGE & CAREER ANNOUNCEMENTS 11/7 – 11/16

For 9th, 10th, 11th, & 12th:

California Academy of Sciences in the Golden Gate Park offers different volunteer or paid internship opportunities for 8th-12th.  These positions are often fun and you learn more about different areas of science.  The next volunteer program they are recruiting is the Teen Advocates for Science Communication.  The application deadline is 1/3/17.  For more details about this volunteer position or other programs or to apply: http://www.calacademy.org/teen-advocates-for-science-communication-tasc

Mission Bit: A company where high school student can earn $300 for taking a FREE coding class in spring semester and by participating in the leadership development fellowship. As a part of the fellowship, students will learn how to code, take part in service learning projects and get an opportunity to work on issues most affecting residents in San Francisco. Please indicate if you’re interested on the application and they will follow up with more information.  To apply online:www.missionbit.com  Application deadline is 1/13/17 by 5pm.

1/14 National Portfolio Day @ 12pm-4pm @ The Art Institute of California – 10 United Nations Plaza, SF: If you’re interested in applying to or curious about how to apply to any art colleges/universities, please bring your work to this FREE event to get professional feedback.  For more details and a list of art colleges at the event: http://portfolioday.net/2016-17-schedule/event/83    

For 11th & 12th:

Bank of America is seeking Student Leader for an 8 week paid internship at a local nonprofit organization.  You will also learn valuable civic, social and business leadership skills; in addition to attending a Summit held in Washington DC (in the summer with all expenses paid) to learn how government, business and the nonprofit sector work together.  For more details, see posting in the Counseling Center or call 1-800-218-9946.   

1/3 & 1/10 College Ambassador Meeting @ 12:20pm @ RM 104: This is your weekly meeting.

For 12th:

During Christmas break, if you wish to continue applying to some private colleges, please do so.

1/3-1/12: During these two weeks, we will present the College Application Process Part II in one of your social studies class, please don’t miss it.  You will learn important follow-ups with your college applications and financial aid related items.

1/11 Meritus Scholarship Application Workshop @ 2:15pm @ RM 104: This is a generous scholarship for seniors: if you meet the following criteria, come work on the application with us!

Unweighted GPA between 3.0 – 3.7 (we will consider students slightly outside of this range)

  • Demonstrated Financial Need (majority of our students are on Free/Reduced Lunch)
  • Plan to attend a 4-year University

1/12 FSA ID Set-Up @ 2:15pm @ RM 104: In order for you to be able to submit FAFSA online, you need to create an FSA ID for yourself and one for one of your parents.  Setting this up only takes a few minutes.  It is best to have this set up before 1/19’s Cash for College.

WORD OF THE WEEK:  DECEMBER 7, 1941: Just before 8 a.m. on December 7, 1941, hundreds of Japanese fighter planes attacked the American naval base at Pearl Harbor near Honolulu, Hawaii, killing more than 2,300 Americans. The U.S.S. Arizona was completely destroyed and the U.S.S. Oklahoma capsized. A total of twelve ships sank or were beached in the attack and nine additional vessels were damaged. More than 160 aircraft were destroyed and more than 150 others damaged.

The following day, in an address to a joint session of Congress, President Franklin Roosevelt called December 7, 1941 “a date which will live in infamy.” Congress then declared War on Japan, abandoning the nation’s isolationism policy and ushering the United States into World War II. Within days, Japan’s allies, Germany and Italy, declared war on the United States, and the country began a rapid transition to a wartime economy by building up armaments in support of military campaigns in the Pacific, North Africa, and Europe.

WINTER BALL: at Hyatt Hotel Fisherman’s Wharf on Dec. 14 from 6 – 10 PM. DJ music for dancing and karaoke for singing. Free ice cream dessert and drinks. Photography by Prestige/Lifetouch. Tickets are sold at ASB store (room 150) during lunch time and after school.

12/7 SF Achievers Scholarship @ 10:05am-12:25pm @ RM 310: SF Achievers is returning to Galileo to provide scholarship applications for African-American boys with 2.0 and above. Qualified students will be receiving passes to attend. This is a valuable college and career mentorship program.  Lunch will be provided.

12/7 On Track Career Expo Event @ 4pm-7pm @ LinkedIn Corporation @ 222 2nd St. SF: This is a FREE event for HS students.  You can learn about careers in STEM, Manufacturing, hospitality, and healthcare. 12/8 ACE Mentor Info. Session @ 2:15pm @ RM 104: A free mentorship program for HS who are curious about what it takes to become an engineer, architect, or construction professional.  It’s a 2-hr. weekly session for 15 weeks.  The team meets in downtown SF.  For more details or to apply: http://www.acementor.org/

12/10 University of Colorado, Colorado Springs @ 9am-10:30am @ Embassy Suites Santa Clara – Silicon Valley: This is an extra-large public research university in the beautiful Colorado.  It’s like our UCs.  This is a free admissions event.

2016 Winter Concert

Galileo Academy’s 2016 Winter Concert was held Tuesday, November 29th at 6pm and Wednesday, November 30th at 10:45 am.

Great job to all of the performers- it was a fantastic way to start our winter off!

Special thanks to Mr. Taylor and Mr. Novota who directed the String Orchestra and the Piano, respectively.
