CAASP testing

Dear Parent/Guardian:


The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) is the statewide assessment system used by California public schools. The CAASPP program is intended to provide information used to monitor student progress and help them succeed, ensuring that all students leave high school ready for college and career.


CAASPP computer-based tests are based on California Common Core State Standards for English language arts/literacy and mathematics. These assessments include the Smarter Balanced computer adaptive tests in English language arts/literacy and mathematics and the California Alternate Assessment for some students with disabilities.


SFUSD students in grades 3-8 and 11 will participate in CAASPP testing beginning in March 2017. In addition, students in grades 5, 8, and 10 will take the California Science Test (CAST), a new computer-based science assessment based on Next Generation Science Standards.

Following the spring 2017 testing, students receive individual score reports. Student score reports will be mailed to parents in the beginning of school year 2017-18. The detailed reports include an overall score, a description of the student’s achievement level for English language arts and mathematics, science (if a participating grade) and other information. Parents/Guardians have the right to request an exemption from all or part of CAASPP testing. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s participation, please contact John Burke ( at the SFUSD Achievement Assessments Office at  (415) 241-6400.

THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: REVIEW: A review is an evaluation of a publication, service, or company such as a movie (a movie review), video game (video game review), musical composition (music review of a composition or recording), book (book review); a piece of hardware like a car, home appliance, or computer; or an event or performance, such as a live music concert, play, musical theater show, dance show, or art exhibition. In addition to a critical evaluation, the review’s author may assign the work a rating to indicate its relative merit.  

Galileo Academy of Science and Technology will undergo a review from March 12 – 15, 2017.  This review is conducted every 6 years by the WASC or the Westernn Association of Schools and Colleges.  We will have 7 visitors on campus during the review and they will be looking at everything that happens at Galileo.

To senior HR teachers & others,

Our annual senior panorama will be on Thursday, March 9 during HR. Please announce the date during HR this Wed. & Thurs. Have seniors go to HR at 9:45 AM. Immediately, escort the seniors to football bleachers. Prestige/Lifetouch will organize the seating area. OK to wear their senior shirts, jerseys, or Galileo sweatshirts. Counselors, staff members, & admin must be on time, too. Envelops will be in teacher mailboxes for distribution hopefully this Wed. or Thurs. Teachers can bring their envelops with money at ASB store (room 150) or collect them after the panorama. Be patient because it is quite difficult to take a panorama of 450 seniors.



ASB CARD STICKERS: are sold at ASB office (room 150) @ $5.00. Discount for dances, sweatshirts, lanyards, & other school spirit items.


ASB STUDENT STORE: in room 150 is selling healthy drinks, snacks, hand towels, mugs,  poms poms, and other school spirit items.


STUDENT ID CARDS: Our Student ID Card software has been updated with the latest student pictures and is now up and running. If you know any current students or new/transfer students in need of an ID card, please direct them to Ms. Rivera in the Counseling office (258E), where our ID printer is located.

For any new/transfer students, first ID card is free of charge. All replacement ID cards will cost $2.


Spirit Week International Food Festival is Friday, March 10 in the Courtyard during lunch time.


PANORAMA PICTURE:  Seniors this photo will be done during Homeroom on Thursday, March 9th. Be on time for Homeroom on March 9th to move to the Field for the photo.  Your homeroom teachers will have forms to order the photo.

3/27-3/31 Spring Break Performing Arts Camp for Teens @ Wilsey Center for Opera, 4th floor of the War Memorial Veterans Building, 401 Van Ness Avenue @ McAllister Street, SF: Fill your Spring Break with music, poetry, dance, theater and digital media storytelling! San Francisco Opera, San Francisco Ballet, A.C.T., Youth Speaks, and Citizen Film in partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs. Lots of exciting opportunities to work with local artists and meet teens from diverse communities.  No performing experience required.  Cost: $10 application fee; tuition is $0-$200. 3/11 NovaHacks @ 8am- 7pm @ 310 Jacobs Hall, UC Berkeley: This is a 10-hour hackathon for HS students.  Students will work in teams of 4 to design & code a challenging project of their choice.  Apply by2/28:

3/16 Minds Matter @ 2:15pm @ RM 104:  This is a FREE program that offers 2 adult professional mentors for the rest of your high school career.  They will also provide college prep. resources such as SAT prep, summer programs, college campus visit for FREE.  They look for low income and first generation to college students. If you’re a freshman, please come check out this fantastic opportunity or work on the application form with us.

Worth Our Weight Boot Camp (WOW) @ Santa Rosa: This is a culinary boot camp, which is a 12-week program that includes professional food service preparation, catering and farm to table gardening.  The tuition is $1,200 and the house dorm room is $225 per 12 week session.  Partial & full scholarships available.  For more info.:

Rotary Club of Fisherman’s Wharf Scholarship: $2,000.  To qualify: graduating senior of Galileo HS, a US citizen, min. LATA Scholarship: Between $1,000 to $5,000.  To qualify: graduating Latino seniors attending SF public HS.
