ASSEMBLY

WORD OF THE WEEK:  ASSEMBLY:  A school assembly is a gathering of all or part of a school for any variety of purposes, such as special programs or communicating information on a daily or weekly basis.  Periodic school assemblies are also a forum for special presenters of educational, health, or safety materials, or for school plays, talent shows, etc.

 

SPECIAL ASSEMBLY SCHEDULE:  The Assembly Schedule for the 2017/18 School Year will be posted on the Galileo Website under Staff Resources by mid-week.  This will include the bell schedule, seating charts and supervision assignments for those teachers and staff who do not have a 4th period class.  Our bell schedule includes a double 4th period.  Half of the school attends Assembly A and the other half attends Assembly B.  When not attending the assembly, students and teachers will be in their 4th period class.  The Bell Schedule and Seating Charts will also be posted on the counter in the Main Office.  Our first assembly is the Welcome Assembly.

PARKING COURTESY:  Please do not block other cars in both the Bay Street and the Polk Street parking lots.  If you have to block a car, do it only for a few minutes and leave your Galileo Parking Hanger in plain sight in your car.  If you do not have a Galileo Parking Hanger, see Bettie Grinnell in the Main Office.    Mrs. Grinnell

 

ACCOUNTANT SCHEDULE CHANGE:  Galileo’s accountant, Eva, will be at Galileo on Thursdays now, instead of Tuesdays.  Her office will remain in Room 206.

 

COFFEE AND COOKIES: Support Special Education by purchasing a cup of fresh roasted coffee $1.25 and cookies $.25. Available daily 7:45am all year long in either room 214 or 212. (alternating bi-weekly)

For 9th, 10th, 11th, & 12th:

Oasis for Girls: a nonprofit located in the mission neighborhood and it pays a stipend for the girls to learn life, social, career readiness, and art skills.  Application deadline is 9/2 by 5pm.  To apply online:http://www.sfoasis.org/

Mission Bit: A company where high school student can earn $300 for taking a FREE coding class. Students will learn how to code, take part in service learning projects and get an opportunity to work on issues most affecting residents in San Francisco. Enterprise for Youth: 9/6 @ 11:45am @ Courtyard: Do you want a part-time job?  Do you want to learn how to be ready for a job?  Come check-out this organization that is focused on supporting high school students to get jobs and internships.

Youth Art Exchange: You can take a semester of free arts classes taught by professional artists and showcase your work in the 7th annual SF Youth Arts Summit at SOMArts.  You can choose from architecture, music production, fashion design, filmmaking, photography, and printmaking.  Application deadline is 9/6/17.  For more details or to apply: youthartexchange.org/enroll

Johns Hopkins University: 9/8 @ 3:15pm @ Rm 104: This is a medium sized liberal art based and the nation’s first research college.  It’s located in Baltimore, Maryland.  This is a well-known yet competitive private college.     

Southern Exposure: a non-profit art organization in SF.  They are now accepting applications from high school youth artists for the 2017–2018 One-on-One Mentorship Program with an individual professional visual artist. This highly individualized art program is free and open to all Bay Area youth. This program aims to develop artistic, educational and life skills by combining the benefits of mentoring relationships with art education. This program is for intermediate to advanced youth artists. Breakthrough SF: a local education nonprofit that motivates middle school students with limited educational opportunities on the road to college.  If you want to tutor 5th-8th grade students at SF Day School, please apply for a volunteer tutor position by 9/22.  Volunteer schedule is between 10/9-12/4, for just one day per week on either Mon./Wed. from 3:30pm-5:30pm or Tues./Thur. from 4pm-6pm.  For more details: www.breakthroughsf.org/volunteer or to apply online: https://goo.gl/5CuUwC

St. Mary’s Medical Center of San Francisco, is offering volunteer opportunities to (High School/College students) who are interested in exploring the medical field. You may help out at either the Information Desk, Clerical/Administrative, Nursing Units, Occupational/Physical Therapy, Sister Mary Phillipa Health Clinic, Clinical Infomatics, Surgery Waiting Room, Emergency Department, or Gift Shop.  Benefits: Chances to receive SF Giants Baseball tickets, participate in walk-a-thons, Toy Drives, Fan Fest special celebrations, free annual TB test, free parking, free coffee/tea, 20% off meals, and much more.  Steps to take:

CSU East Bay Preview Day: 10/14 @ 8am-12pm @ 25800 Carlos Bee Blvd., Hayward: Learn about admission requirements, academic programs, financial aid, and get a tour of campus and housing.  This is a free open house for freshmen, transfer students, and their families.  To RSVP:csueastbay.edu/previewday

The Perry Initiative: UCSF hosts this event to inspire young women to be leaders in Orthopaedic Surgery and engineering.  This is a day long program to explore hands-on workshop modules and receive mentorship from women surgeons and engineers.  Deadline to apply is 10/28.  For more information or to apply: http://perryinitiative.org/student-online-application/

  

For 9th and 10th:

The Mayor’s Youth Employment and Education Program (MYEEP) is accepting applications for the new school year. Our mission is to provide job readiness training, work experience, and personal development to San Francisco youth challenged in their attempt to access employment. Aside from the employment aspect of MYEEP, each agency has their own tutor to gauge and monitor academic goals set up before the program begins with each individual student. College Ambassador (CA) Training: Finding the Right Colleges: 9/6 @ 2:15pm @ RM 104: If you’re a College Ambassador or interested in becoming one, attend this workshop, so you can start on your college application ASAP.

SF YouthWorks is hiring.  You will be paid for $14 per hour.  Must be a junior or senior, live in SF, be able to work at least 6 hours per week on weekdays.  You will be exposed to public service careers at different government dept.  To apply: www.sfyouthworks.org by 9/15 5pm.

OPENING DAY FALL SEMESTER:  The sehedule for the day will begin with Homeroom, where studentes will pick up their class schedules for the Fall Semester.  Homeroom will run from 8:00am – 8:30am.  Check your email for the schedule for Monday, August 21, 2017.

Freshmen Orientation

Friday, August 18th, will be Freshmen Orientation for Galileo’s class of 2021 (the class that will graduate on Galileo Academy’s 100th anniversary).

Orientation will begin in the Galileo Auditorium at 8:30 am. Freshmen and their parents can see video of last year’s fun student activities, and meet Galileo’s leadership team. Then incoming students will get tours of the Galileo building, and information about different services offered by the school. Finally, there will be a lunch in the Courtyard, at 12 noon, generously sponsored by our PTSA.

Then students should prepare for the start of the school year the following Monday morning, August 21st.
