WORD OF THE WEEK: TAX DAY, April 17, 2018:  Every year since 1955, taxes have been due on April 15 … except for sometimes. Like the last two years. And this year. Tax Day falls on April 17 for 2018. That’s the deadline for filing your 2017 federal tax return, the last day to make a contribution to an individual retirement account for it to count against 2017 income, the deadline to file a tax extension, and the day when quarterly estimated tax payments are due for those who make them.

 

So why is Tax Day on April 17 this year? Basically, it’s due to a combination of the 15th falling on a Sunday and a holiday unique to Washington, D.C., hitting on Monday the 16th. The nation’s capital celebrates Emancipation Day to mark the date that President Abraham Lincoln freed slaves there in 1862. While it’s a local holiday, it affects when taxes are due.

Last year, Tax Day was even later due to similar circumstances: the 15thwas on a Saturday and Emancipation Day was celebrated on Monday the 17th. So taxes last year were due April 18. In 2019 Tax Day will return to April 15th.

PARKING COURTESY:  Please do not block other cars in both the Bay Street and the Polk Street parking lots.  If you have to block a car, do it only for a few minutes and leave your Galileo Parking Hanger in plain sight in your car.  If you do not have a Galileo Parking Hanger, see Bettie Grinnell in the Main Office.    Mrs. Grinnell

 

NEW ACCOUNTANT:  Galileo’s former accountant, Eva,has been transferred to SOTA.  Our new accountant is Lisa and she will be at Galileo on Thursdays.  Her office will remain in Room 206.

 

COFFEE AND COOKIES: Support Special Education by purchasing a cup of fresh roasted coffee $1.25 and cookies $.25. Available daily 7:45am all year long in either room 214 or 212. (alternating bi-weekly)

JUNIOR HOMEROOM ASSEMBLY:  The Junior Homeroom Assembly will be this Thursday during homeroom in the Auditorium.  All 11th Grade Homeroom Teachers should bring their students to the Auditorium on Thursday as soon as the bell rings. Homeroom Assemblies will continue through the end of May.  Check the bulletin each week for the schedule.

 

GALILEO BLACK HOODIE SWEATSHIRTS:  On sale now in the ASB Office (Room 150);  teacher & staff discount is $25.

 

TEACHER LOCATOR:  The Current Teacher Locator is now posted on the Galileo Website.  Check the Staff Support Area on the website. This document will be updated daily.

 

STAFF PHONE DIRECTORY:  The current Staff Phone Directory is now posted on the Galileo website in the Staff Support Area.  There are 2 versions which you can print out–legal size and letter size. This document will be updated as needed.

 

TEACHER VOICEMAIL:  It is important for parents to contact their students’ teachers.  If you have not set up your email, please see me and I can help facilitate this.  It is important for parents to be able to contact their child’s teachers. It takes 2-3 minutes and we can do it at my desk.

 

TEACHER EMERGENCY CARDS:  Hi All– It is so important that we have current information on your emergency card about who to contact in an emergency.  With so many new staff this year it has been challenging to reach out to everyone. GRADUATION SPEAKER TRYOUTS: Seniors…come try out to become a speaker at Graduation! Sign Ups are posted on Ms. Marshman’s door. Sign up by April 27th.

 

JUNIOR HOMEROOM ASSEMBLY:  The Juior Homeroom Assembly Will be this Thursday during Homeroom.  All 11th Grade Homeroom Teachers should bring their students to the Auditorium as soon as the bell rings.

 

GALILEO GEEK SQUAD: Interested in troubleshooting technology issues? Want to assist with the technology program and procedures during your free time at Galileo? Need IT or Tech experience for college/career? Looking for a fun and easy way to get Media Arts or Computer Science extra credit? JOIN GALILEO’S GEEK SQUAD!!! Geek Squad will spend their free periods being responsible for many of the technology issues that arise throughout the day at Galileo. Geek Squad will work on Chromebooks, MacBooks, PCs, iMacs, audio systems, SmartBoards, technology lab and carts, and miscellaneous tech items. Geek Squad members will receive a letter grade for their TA period as well as a signed letter of recommendation from a technology teacher to use on college and job applications. Mission Bit.: 4/18 @ 11:45am @ RM 104: Through project based learning we aim to teach both core computer science concepts as well as the practical skills that are required to build web sites and applications today.  Our summer program offers introductory and advanced courses that last 6 weeks. In addition to our classes, we take students on field trips to Bay Area tech companies, offer career and college advising related to the technology field, and provide an opportunity to showcase their group projects during our Demo Day event at the end of the term.  Registration Deadline is May 11, 2018 at 5pm.  To register:  https://www.missionbit.com/programs/

15th Annual HS Outreach Conference: 4/28 @ 8:30am-4pm @ UCSF on 513 Parnassus Ave. SF: FREE event for 400 HS students who’re curious about the medical profession.  You will spend the day talking to medical, dental, nursing, pharmacy, physical therapy, and graduate students at UCSF.  Try it for yourself with hands on demos from each school. For 12th:

FRISCO Day: 5/4: A district wide college transitional event for all seniors.  For seniors who will not be attending a 4-year college next year, they will all go to CCSF for different workshops and programs.  Please pick up a permission slip from RM 258F, or RM 209 or from your counselor. The form must be signed by parents and returned to RM 258F by 4/26.  For seniors who will go to a 4-year college, they will stay on campus and will go to a 4th period assembly.

CCSF App. Workshop: 4/18 & 4/25 @ 2:15pm @ RM 104: Seniors, this is your last chance to apply for CCSF for fall 2018.

Funding Black Futures: Award Letter Review: 4/21 @ 10am-1pm @ Bayview Hunter’s Point YMCA: This is a FREE event for African American seniors in the district.  This event will help you and your family to review and compare financial aid awards from your colleges to make a financially-informed decision by the 5/1 decision deadline.  Light breakfast & catered lunch provided & great raffle prizes! Scholarship Awards: If you win any scholarship awards, please give Michael (RM 209) a copy of your notification or email him the info.: michaell@uaspire.org.  We will need this info. by 4/27 in order to print your name and scholarship award on the graduation program.

Scholarship Scam: if you get a call telling you that you’ve won a scholarship or that they are calling from the federal dept. to give you a scholarship, and they need your bank account information, please DON’T give out your parents’ nor your own information. If you’re not sure that is a scam, please talk to a counselor or an advisor to verify.   If you’re told to pay to apply for a scholarship, that’s a scam.

uAspire can help you with financial aid related questions.  Turn in your uAspire consent forms to Michael in room 209 to receive financial aid help.
