WORD OF THE WEEK: SCHOOL SPIRIT
School spirit is the sense of identity and community shared by members of an educational institution. This can apply to any type of school, from elementary schools to universities. Educators in primary and secondary education often associate proper behavior with school spirit, especially in the context of situations when students are outside the school itself. Because student behavior reflects on the school, representing it well shows a degree of student investment in their institution’s good name. This definition of school spirit is closely associated with good sportsmanship among students and their families at sporting events and is loosely based upon encouraging each other.

Indoor Soccer Sign Ups!
If students are interested in playing indoor soccer pick up a form in room 119!
Practices will take place on Wednesdays from 5-6PM and will be taught by accredited soccer coaches. Open to all grades and skill levels. Futurama/Jose Carrsco
ScriptEd
Futurama in partnership with ScriptEd will be offering a year long twice-a week coding bootcamp for students. Students will learn the basics of computer programming from experts who work in tech. Classes will be Mondays and Tuesdays after school. Come to room 119 for sign ups! Futurama/Jose Carrasco

University of Southern California: 9/17 @ 12:20pm @ RM 263: This is a competitive private college in So. Cal and we have had students who got good scholarships from this college. Come check it out.
Dartmouth Bound: 9/17 @ 6:30pm-8:30pm @ KIPP San Francisco College Preparatory: For high-achieving high school seniors from under-resourced and/or under-represented backgrounds in the Bay Area who have the potential and academic talent to thrive at highly-selective college like Dartmouth. Our hope is that students leave the workshop knowing a little more about how an Ivy League education will prepare them for a dynamic life and career in the 21st century, and confident that the education offered at Dartmouth and our peer institutions is accessible and affordable to them. As the admissions representative for the Bay Area, I will share more about the holistic admissions process. Dino Koff, Director of Financial Aid, will be leading a special workshop to demystify the financial aid process and how to pay for college. Students can invite a parent, guardian, or anyone from the counseling staff to join them for the session. Goucher College: 9/17 @ 3:15pm @ RM 260: This is a small private college located in Baltimore, Maryland. They support study abroad while you’re in college. Come check it out.
Northeastern University: @ 9/17 @ 7pm-8pm @ Jewish Community HS of the Bay, SF: Meet David Girvan, Assistant Director of Admissions, for a special event that will include: the opportunity to connect with admissions staff & insights into the application process. Mount Holyoke College: 9/19 @ lunch time @ RM 263: This is an all-women’s private college located in MA. They’re part of a big consortium network, where you may take classes for free at the nearby colleges and transportation will be provided between the campuses.
High Point University: 9/19 @ 2:15pm @ RM 260: It is a private medium size university with strong business, health science, and furniture design majors. The campus is located in North Carolina. This college’s learning resources is amazing!
Boston University: 9/20 @ lunch time @ RM 263: This is a large private research university located in the center of Boston. Location can’t be better than this!
Clarkson University: 9/20 @ 2:15pm @ RM 260: Small private research university with approximately 3,500 students, located in the northern New York State. Most popular majors are engineering, business, physical sciences, and health care professions. Strong experiential approach to learning, with almost 90% of students complementing studies with internships. Placement rate for graduates in their field of study typically exceeds a 96%, financial aid offered to 95% of students, approximately 60% of applicants admitted.
Duke Kunshan University: 9/18 @ 3:15pm @ RM 260: Get a Duke education in China! Harvard Undergraduate Women in Business (HUWIB) is inviting HS girls to the Young Women’s Business Leadership Conference (YWBLC): 11/3-11/4 @ Harvard University: To learn more about the business world, meet other young women who share their passions, and hear from industry experts on what it is like to be a female leader. ShadowNite: 11/15-11/17 @ UC Berkeley: Encourage Asian/Pacific Island students to apply: It’s a FREE 3 day & 2 night program. Transportation from high school campus to the UCB campus, housing and food will be provided. Informative workshops to educate and provide the students with resources to higher education as well as workshops that encourage youth involvement in the community will be provided. Shadow Buddy: Are you interested in becoming a shadow mentor? As a shadow mentor, you will be assigned to an 8th grader, and you will be able to show them what it’s like to be a student at Galileo! College Application Workshop: 9/19 @ 2:15pm @ RM 260: Every Wed. & Thur. after school in Computer Lab 260, you’re welcome to come work on any college application forms with us. We can also talk about any college related questions you may have or need help on. Snacks provide.
Free College Fly-In Program: Some private out of state colleges offer free fly-in programs to visit their campus in the fall. This is a fun opportunity and you will learn a lot about their communities. Please check the updated College Fly-In Program list: http://galileoweb.org/college/flyin/

SOCIAL COMMITTEE CONTRIBUTION: The Social Committee provides breakfast for our days before school, as well as special celebrations throughout the school year, including HALLOWEEN, WINTER BREAK AND VANELTINE’S DAY AND RETIREMENT GIFTS FOR THOSE RETIRING AT THE END OF THE YEAR. STAFF PHONE DIRECTORY: The current Staff Phone Directory is now posted on the Galileo website in the Staff Support Area. There are 2 versions which you can print out–legal size and letter size. This document will be updated as needed.
TEACHER VOICEMAIL: It is important for parents to contact their students’ teachers. If you have not set up your email, please see me and I can help facilitate this. It is important for parents to be able to contact their child’s teachers. It takes 2-3 minutes and we can do it at my desk.
