BRITON RIVIÈRE, UNA AND LION, NINETEENTH CENTURY.

“In like a lion, out like a lamb” has always seemed a straightforward enough proverb: when March starts, it’s still winter, and by the end of the month spring has begun. True, in many climates the weather hasn’t quite reached the lamb stage by the end of the month—it’s more like a surly cat, maybe, or one of those awful territorial honking geese.

For 9th, 10th, 11th, & 12th :

Naval Academy Summer Seminar (NASS): If you are currently in your junior year of high school and considering the Naval Academy as your college of choice, we strongly recommend you consider applying to Summer Seminar.  Summer Seminar will introduce you to life at the Naval Academy, where you will experience first-class academic, athletic, and professional training at the #1 public college in the US!  Your Summer Seminar application will serve as a preliminary application to the Naval Academy that you will complete before or during your senior year. Reasons to apply to Summer Seminar: live in Bancroft Hall (world’s largest dorm!), experiences life on “the Yard,” learn from the best Midshipmen.  Applications are open now!! Scholarships available!!

 

Popular degree majors include:  Hospitality/ Culinary Arts, Nutrition, Computer Science, Business Administration, Entrepreneurship, Sport/Event/Entertainment Management; Robotics, Health Sciences, Criminology and Equine Management & Science ( Riding /Non-Riding program)  over 35 degree programs are offered. Graduate, terminal programs in Health Sciences include: Physician’s Assistant (PA), Doctorate of Occupational Therapy (DOT), Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine. Future Day: UC Davis Veterinary School’s Student Outreach Club: 4/20 @ 8am-3pm @ UC Davis campus: Do you like science? Do you love animals? Do you want to be a veterinarian? Join us for a day of interesting case studies & hands-on wetlabs! St. Mary’s College Campus Visit: 3/5 @ 8am-3:30pm: We’re happy to bring any students who are interested in visiting this campus.  As for seniors, if you have applied to UCSC and have gotten accepted, we’re happy to take you along. Lunch & transportation will be provided.  Please pick up a field trip form from Ms. S. Chan (RM 258F) or from Kristin (RM 209). Space available based on first come first served basis.

 

Summer Opportunities Fair: 3/6 @ Lunchtime @ Courtyard: Want a summer paid internship, or job, or fun programs? Come check out 17 different organizations!

 

Skyline Community College: 3/6 @ 2:15pm @ RM 260: This a community college located in San Bruno city.  They offer free Daly City BART station pickup. Majority of the students are recent high school graduates, so it’s easier for you to make new friends.  Come check them out!

UC Santa Cruz (UCSC) Campus Visit: 3/7 @ 8am-3:30pm: We’re happy to bring any 9th-11th students who are interested in visiting this campus.  As for seniors, if you have applied to UCSC and have gotten accepted, we’re happy to take you along. Lunch & transportation will be provided.  Please pick up a field trip form from Ms. S. Chan (RM 258F) or from Kristin (RM 209). Space available based on first come first served basis.

Celebrate International Women’s Day: 3/13 @ 11am-2pm: Bloomberg Business @ Pier 1, SF: This company has invited 20 of our girls & boys to visit them to learn about office etiquette, trends on characteristics & skills that can be promoted to the management level, #BalanceForBetter and share some success stories of female founders and female CEOs.  Lunch will be included and you will get a tour of the company as well. The 13th Annual Northern California Pre-Pharmacy Symposium (NCPPS): 4/6 @ 9am-5pm @ UC Berkeley: Are you interested in a service-oriented career? Come explore whether pharmacy fits your career goals and interests!

The field of pharmacy extends beyond working at local pharmacies. Today, pharmacists work in a broader context from conducting clinical research in pharmaceutical industry to adjusting personalized medications in hospitals and outpatient clinics. Come learn career in pharmacy and how to apply to pharmacy schools. This opportunity includes networking with leading pharmacy professionals, exploring some of the nation’s top pharmacy schools, and learning about the diverse career paths in pharmacy. This daylong symposium will feature workshops, presentations, and panels to help answer any of your questions regarding a career in pharmacy. Financial Aid / Scholarship Application Workshop: 2/27 & 2/28 @ 2:15pm @ RM 260: Every Wed. & Thur., you’re welcome to come work on any financial aid and or scholarship application forms with us.  We can also talk about any college & financial aid related questions you may have or need help on. Snacks provided.

CCSF ELD Placement: 2/27 @ 10am-11:45am @ RM 301: If you have applied to CCSF for the fall and is current taking ELD class, please sign-up for this placement exam with Ms. S. Chan ASAP (RM 258F).

Transition to College: 2/28 @ 5:30pm @ Cafeteria: Parents & students, are you interested in knowing how to best prepare for the college transition and what resources are available for you in college to support you to do well? Come to this presentation in English and Cantonese with Spanish translation.  A light dinner is provided. See you!

Financial Aid Application Form: either FAFSA for students with social security numbers or the CA Dream Act for undocumented students: due date is March 2. Submitting either one of the application forms may help you qualify for free money, or work study, or student loans to cover college cost & expenses.  We’re happy to you complete either one of these forms on Wed. or Thur. after school in RM 260.

uAspire can help you with financial aid related questions now and during college years for free.  Please turn in your consent form to RM 209 ASAP. You can pick up a consent form in the Counseling Center or in RM 209.

If you’re interested in applying for scholarships, please check the updated Scholarship List either onhttp://galileoweb.org/college/scholarships/ or on the Scholarship bulletin board in the Counseling Center (RM 258).  It’s also sent via Remind Text when it’s updated.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE CONTRIBUTION:  The Social Committee provides breakfast for our days before school, as well as special celebrations throughout the school year, including HALLOWEEN, WINTER BREAK AND VALENTINE’S DAY AND RETIREMENT GIFTS FOR THOSE RETIRING AT THE END OF THE YEAR.  The contribution is $25.00 per year and helps with the costs of these celebrations.  Check or cash is fine. PARKING COURTESY:  Please do not block other cars in both the Bay Street and the Polk Street parking lots.  If you have to block a car, do it only for a few minutes and leave your Galileo Parking Hanger in plain sight in your car.  If you do not have a Galileo Parking Hanger, see Bettie Grinnell in the Main Office. ALSO PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE IS NO MORE PARKING ON FRANCISCO STREET BY THE FLAG POLE.  CURRENTLY WE HAVE ALSO BEEN TOLD NOT TO PARK ON THE SIDE OF THE BUILDING ON FRANCISCO STREET AS THIS BREAKS THE LAW OF “NO DRIVING ON SIDEWALKS.”  Further information may be forthcoming.    Mrs. Grinnell
