WORD OF THE WEEK:  Year of the Pig

2019 is the Year of the Pig according to Chinese zodiac. This is a Year of Earth Pig, starting from Feb. 5, 2019 (Chinese New Year) and lasting to Jan. 24, 2020.

Pig is the twelfth in the 12-year cycle of Chinese zodiac sign. The Years of the Pig include 1923, 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007, 2019, 2031, 2043…

 

Pig is not thought to be a smart animal in China. It likes sleeping and eating and becomes fat. Thus it usually features laziness and clumsiness. On the positive side, it behaves itself, has no plan to harm others, and can bring affluence to people. Consequently, it has been regarded as wealth.

Naval Academy Summer Seminar (NASS): If you are currently in your junior year of high school and considering the Naval Academy as your college of choice, we strongly recommend you consider applying to Summer Seminar.  Summer Seminar will introduce you to life at the Naval Academy, where you will experience first-class academic, athletic, and professional training at the #1 public college in the US!  Your Summer Seminar application will serve as a preliminary application to the Naval Academy that you will complete before or during your senior year. Reasons to apply to Summer Seminar: live in Bancroft Hall (world’s largest dorm!), experiences life on “the Yard,” learn from the best Midshipmen.  Applications are open now!! Black College Expo: 2/9 @ 9am-5pm @ Oracle Area, Oakland: Seniors and Juniors and College Transfer Students meet one on one with top HBCUs and a variety of other colleges and universities and get answers right on the spot. St. Mary’s College Campus Visit: 3/5 @ 8am-3:30pm: We’re happy to bring any students who are interested in visiting this campus.  As for seniors, if you have applied to UCSC and have gotten accepted, we’re happy to take you along. Lunch & transportation will be provided.  Please pick up a field trip form from Ms. S. Chan (RM 258F) or from Kristin (RM 209). Space available based on first come first served basis.

UC Santa Cruz (UCSC) Campus Visit: 3/7 @ 8am-3:30pm: We’re happy to bring any 9th-11th students who are interested in visiting this campus.  As for seniors, if you have applied to UCSC and have gotten accepted, we’re happy to take you along. Lunch & transportation will be provided.  Please pick up a field trip form from Ms. S. Chan (RM 258F) or from Kristin (RM 209). Space available based on first come first served basis.

For 9th & 10th:

CTE, AP & AVID Fair: 2/4/19 @ Gym:  All 9th and 10th graders will have the opportunity to explore a variety of the course options and amazing programs we offer at Galileo, including our CTE, AP and AVID courses. Your PE teacher will take you down to the fair where you can talk to some of the teachers of these courses and find out more about the options available to you during your time here at Galileo. This is a great opportunity to plan ahead not only for what courses you will take next year, but also in the years to come! Counselors will be present at the fair as well. This will help you prepare in advance for when counselors provide in-depth informational course selection presentations in the last two weeks of February, and when you select your courses in March

 

For 12th:

CCSF Info. & Application Workshop for Students with Learning Support: 2/6@ 2:15pm @ RM 260: Come learn more about what’s available at CCSF, how to apply, and complete an application.

Financial Aid / Scholarship Application Workshop: 2/7 @ 2:15pm @ RM 260: Every Wed. & Thur., you’re welcome to come work on any financial aid and or scholarship application forms with us.  We can also talk about any college & financial aid related questions you may have or need help on. Snacks provided.

CCSF Campus Visit: 2/21 @ 8am-2pm: If you’re interested in community college or have applied to this campus, please pick up a field trip form from either Ms. S. Chan (RM 258F) or from Kristin (RM 209).  The signed permission slip must be returned to Kristin (RM 209) by 2/14.  Lunch & transportation will be provided.

Financial Aid Application Form: either FAFSA for students with social security numbers or the CA Dream Act for undocumented students: due date is March 2. Submitting either one of the application forms may help you qualify for free money, or work study, or student loans to cover college cost & expenses.  We’re happy to you complete either one of these forms on Wed. or Thur. after school in RM 260.

uAspire can help you with financial aid related questions now and during college years for free.  Please turn in your consent form to RM 209 ASAP. You can pick up a consent form in the Counseling Center or in RM 209.

If you’re interested in applying for scholarships, please check the updated Scholarship List either onhttp://galileoweb.org/college/scholarships/ or on the Scholarship bulletin board in the Counseling Center (RM 258).  It’s also sent via Remind Text when it’s updated.

SCHOOL ACCOUNTANT’S REGULAR DAY FOR 2018 – 2019 SCHOOL YEAR:  The school accountant will come on Thursdays from 8:30am – 3:30pm. She is located in one of the offices in Room 206.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE CONTRIBUTION:  The Social Committee provides breakfast for our days before school, as well as special celebrations throughout the school year, including HALLOWEEN, WINTER BREAK AND VALENTINE’S DAY AND RETIREMENT GIFTS FOR THOSE RETIRING AT THE END OF THE YEAR.  The contribution is $25.00 per year and helps with the costs of these celebrations.  Check or cash is fine. PARKING COURTESY:  Please do not block other cars in both the Bay Street and the Polk Street parking lots.  If you have to block a car, do it only for a few minutes and leave your Galileo Parking Hanger in plain sight in your car.  If you do not have a Galileo Parking Hanger, see Bettie Grinnell in the Main Office. ALSO PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE IS NO MORE PARKING ON FRANCISCO STREET BY THE FLAG POLE.  CURRENTLY WE HAVE ALSO BEEN TOLD NOT TO PARK ON THE SIDE OF THE BUILDING ON FRANCISCO STREET AS THIS BREAKS THE LAW OF “NO DRIVING ON SIDEWALKS.”  Further information may be forthcoming.    Mrs. Grinnell
