LABOR DAY

WORD OF THE WEEK:  LABOR DAY: Labor Day in the United States is a public holiday celebrated on the first Monday in September. It honors the American labor movement and the contributions that workers have made to the strength, prosperity, laws and well-being of the country. It is the Monday of the long weekend known as Labor Day Weekend and it is considered the unofficial end of summer in the United States. The holiday is also a federal holiday.

Beginning in the late 19th century, as the trade union and labor movements grew, trade unionists proposed that a day be set aside to celebrate labor. “Labor Day” was promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor, which organized the first parade in New York City. In 1887, Oregon was the first state of the United States to make it an official public holiday. By the time it became an official federal holiday in 1894, thirty U.S. states officially celebrated Labor Day.

The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883.

Need IT or Tech experience for college/career? Looking for a fun and easy way to get Media Arts or Computer Science extra credit? JOIN GALILEO’S GEEK SQUAD!!! Geek Squad will spend their free periods being responsible for many of the technology issues that arise throughout the day at Galileo. Geek Squad will work on Chromebooks, MacBooks, PCs, iMacs, audio systems, SmartBoards, technology lab and carts, and miscellaneous tech items. Geek Squad members will receive a letter grade for their TA period as well as a signed letter of recommendation from a technology teacher to use on college and job applications. Southern Exposure: a non-profit art organization in SF.  They are now accepting applications from high school youth artists for the 2017–2018 One-on-One Mentorship Program with an individual professional visual artist. This highly individualized art program is free and open to all Bay Area youth. This program aims to develop artistic, educational and life skills by combining the benefits of mentoring relationships with art education. This program is for intermediate to advanced youth artists. WORD OF THE WEEK:  ASSEMBLY:  A school assembly is a gathering of all or part of a school for any variety of purposes, such as special programs or communicating information on a daily or weekly basis.  Periodic school assemblies are also a forum for special presenters of educational, health, or safety materials, or for school plays, talent shows, etc.

 

SPECIAL ASSEMBLY SCHEDULE:  The Assembly Schedule for the 2017/18 School Year will be posted on the Galileo Website under Staff Resources by mid-week.  This will include the bell schedule, seating charts and supervision assignments for those teachers and staff who do not have a 4th period class.  Our bell schedule includes a double 4th period.  Half of the school attends Assembly A and the other half attends Assembly B.  When not attending the assembly, students and teachers will be in their 4th period class.  The Bell Schedule and Seating Charts will also be posted on the counter in the Main Office.  Our first assembly is the Welcome Assembly.

The Mayor’s Youth Employment and Education Program (MYEEP) is accepting applications for the new school year. Our mission is to provide job readiness training, work experience, and personal development to San Francisco youth challenged in their attempt to access employment. Aside from the employment aspect of MYEEP, each agency has their own tutor to gauge and monitor academic goals set up before the program begins with each individual student. MOTHER’S DAY

THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: MOTHER’S DAY:  Mother’s Day is a celebration honoring the mother of the family, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in the months of March or May. It complements similar celebrations honoring family members, such as Father’s Day, Siblings Day, and Grandparents Day.

The modern holiday of Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother at St Andrew’s Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia. St Andrew’s Methodist Church now holds the International Mother’s Day Shrine. Her campaign to make “Mother’s Day” a recognized holiday in the United States began in 1905, the year her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, died. Ann Jarvis had been a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the American Civil War, and created Mother’s Day Work Clubs to address public health issues. Anna Jarvis wanted to honor her mother by continuing the work she started and to set aside a day to honor all mothers because she believed that they were “the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world.”

In 1914, Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother’s Day, held on the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honor mothers.

STUDENT ID CARDS: Our Student ID Card software has been updated with the latest student pictures and is now up and running. If you know any current students or new/transfer students in need of an ID card, please direct them to Ms. Rivera in the Counseling office (258E), where our ID printer is located.

For any new/transfer students, first ID card is free of charge. All replacement ID cards will cost $2.00.

 

COLLEGE & CAREER ANNOUNCEMENTS  5/15-5/21/17

5/18 CCSF CHIN31A @ 2:15pm @ RM 104: CCSF will be offering the course Chinese 31A (Intermediate Mandarin for Bilingual Speakers) here at Galileo in the Fall! read below, and if you have questions, see Ms. S. Chan or Ms. Marshman in Counseling. The class will meet on Wednesdays, in the Fall semester, from 2:30-5:30pm. A CCSF professor will teach it.  You can earn 3 college units, which equals 10 high school credits. And it’s weighted.  This credit is transferable to UC & CSU.  This is just like taking a Chinese language course at a UC. It’s a very impressive course to have on your transcript and will give you extra consideration when applying to colleges.  If you have completed AP Chinese, you qualify to take this class. If you couldn’t take AP Chinese because you already speak Mandarin, you qualify. The course is open to current 9th-11th graders.

Enterprise for Youth is hiring for the Summer Cycle of the Pathways Career Ahead Program: It runs from June 12 – August 11! Pathways is a career awareness and job readiness program aimed to prepare youth for the world of work while exposing them to meaningful educational and career opportunities. THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: VE DAY: Victory in Europe Day, generally known as V-E Day, VE Day or simply V Day, was the public holiday celebrated on 8 May 1945 to mark the formal acceptance by the Allies of World War II of Nazi Germany‘s unconditional surrender of its armed forces. It thus marked the end of World War II in Europe.

Upon the defeat of Germany, celebrations erupted throughout the world. From Moscow to Los Angeles, people celebrated.

In the United Kingdom, more than one million people celebrated in the streets to mark the end of the European part of the war. In London, crowds massed in Trafalgar Square and up the Mall to Buckingham Palace, where King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, accompanied by Prime Minister Winston Churchill, appeared on the balcony of the palace before the cheering crowds. Princess Elizabeth (the future Queen Elizabeth II) and her sister Princess Margaret were allowed to wander incognito among the crowds and take part in the celebrations.

In the United States, the victory happened on President Harry Truman‘s 61st birthday. He dedicated the victory to the memory of his predecessor, Franklin D. Roosevelt, who had died of a cerebral hemorrhage less than a month earlier, on the 12th of April Flags remained at half-staff for the remainder of the 30-day mourning period. Truman said of dedicating the victory to Roosevelt’s memory and keeping the flags at half-staff that his only wish was “that Franklin D. Roosevelt had lived to witness this day.” Later that day, Truman said that the victory made it his most enjoyable birthday.

Massive celebrations also took place in Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami and especially in New York‘s Times Square.

SEAL OF BILITERACY:  Congratulations to our graduating seniors who have earned the Seal of Biliteracy for their academic achievement in two languages. Students receiving this award should have received a congratulatory letter, and will earn a special Seal on their diploma. The Seal of Biliteracy can be used to demonstrate your bilingual abilities to future employers and educational opportunities. If you think you might qualify but did not receive a letter, please see Ms. Galdamez for an application as soon as possible. Applications are due May 4th.

THOUGHT OF THE WEEK:CINCO de MAYO: Cinco de Mayo (pronounced: [ˈsiŋko ðe ˈmaʝo]; Spanish for “Fifth of May”) is a celebration held on May 5. The date is observed to commemorate the Mexican Army‘s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza.

In the United States, Cinco de Mayo has taken on a significance beyond that in Mexico. In the U.S. the date has become associated with the celebration ofMexican-American culture. In Mexico, the commemoration of the battle continues to be mostly ceremonial, such as through military parades.

In the United States, Cinco de Mayo is sometimes mistaken to be Mexico’s Independence Day—the most important national holiday in Mexico—which is celebrated on September 16, commemorating the Cry of Dolores that initiated the war of Mexican independence from Spain.

5/5 FRISCO Day: seniors attending a community college, military, work, or undecided after graduation will go on an ALL DAY field trip to CCSF. You

will meet at 8am in our auditorium and be bused to CCSF.  If you didn’t pick up a field trip form for this, please come by the College & Career Center (RM 258F) to pick up a copy.  The signed permission slip must be returned to Ms. S. Chan ASAP.

Seniors attending a 4-year after graduation will remain on campus that day. You will attend your 1,2,3,5,6th period classes (but not 4th).  There will be a 4th period assembly about turning 18, financial concerns, etc. You still have to go to your 4th period class and be escorted to the auditorium by your teacher.  Then during lunchtime there will be a Transition to College Fair in the courtyard.

THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: CLIMATE CHANGE: a change in global or regional climate patterns, in particular a change apparent from the mid to late 20th century onwards and attributed largely to the increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide produced by the use of fossil fuels. Within scientific journals, global warming refers to surface temperature increases while climate changeincludes global warming and everything else that increasing greenhouse gas levels affect. A related term is “climatic change“.

4/27 BlueStamp Engineering @ 11:45am @ RM 104: BlueStamp Engineering is a six-week, hands-on summer program where high school students build technology projects they’re passionate about. Each student selects their own projects and completes the program with 2 projects (which they keep). They also develop their own personal online portfolio that details their journey with videos, technical descriptions of their work, milestones, and blog postings.  This personal portfolio can then be shared with colleges and prospective employers.  Come learn more about the program!

5/5 FRISCO Day: seniors attending a community college, military, work, or undecided after graduation will go on an ALL DAY field trip to CCSF. You will meet at 8am in our auditorium and be bused to CCSF. If you didn’t pick up a field trip form for this, please come by the College & Career Center (RM 258F) to pick up a copy.  The signed permission slip must be returned to Ms. S. Chan ASAP.

Seniors attending a 4-year after graduation will remain on campus that day. You will attend your 1,2,3,5,6th period classes (but not 4th).  There will be a 4th period assembly about turning 18, financial concerns, etc. You still have to go to your 4th period class and be escorted to the auditorium by your teacher.  Then during lunchtime there will be a Transition to College Fair in the courtyard.

THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: EARTH DAY: April 22, 2017–Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22. Worldwide, various events are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First celebrated in 1970, Earth Day events in more than 193 countries are now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network.

On Earth Day 2016, the landmark Paris Agreement was signed by the United States, China, and some 120 other countries. This signing satisfied a key requirement for the entry into force of the historic draft climate protection treaty adopted by consensus of the 195 nations present at the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris.

In 1969 at a UNESCO Conference in San Francisco, peace activist John McConnell proposed a day to honor the Earth and the concept of peace, to first be celebrated on March 21, 1970, the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere. This day of nature’s equipoise was later sanctioned in a proclamation written by McConnell and signed by Secretary General U Thant at the United Nations. A month later a separate Earth Day was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in first held on April 22, 1970. Nelson was later awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom award in recognition of his work. While this April 22 Earth Day was focused on the United States, an organization launched by Denis Hayes, who was the original national coordinator in 1970, took it international in 1990 and organized events in 141 nations.

Numerous communities celebrate Earth Week, an entire week of activities focused on the environmental issues that the world faces. In 2017, the March for Science occurs on Earth day (April 22, 2017) and is followed by the People’s Climate Mobilization (April 29, 2017).

Quest focuses on excellence in undergraduate education. Students take one class at a time under the Block Plan and create a self-designed major while working closely with a faculty mentor.

SERENDIPITY

THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: SERENDEPITY:  Serendipity means a “fortunate happenstance” or “pleasant surprise”. It was coined by Horace Walpole in 1754. In a letter he wrote to a friend, Walpole explained an unexpected discovery he had made by reference to a Persian fairy tale, The Three Princes of Serendip. The princes, he told his correspondent, were “always making discoveries, by accidents and sagacity, of things which they were not in quest of”. The notion of serendipity is a common occurrence throughout the history of scientific innovation such as Alexander Fleming‘s accidental discovery of penicillin in 1928, the invention of the microwave oven by Percy Spencer in 1945, and the invention of the Post-it note by Spencer Silver in 1968.

In June 2004, a British translation company voted the word to be one of the ten English words hardest to translate.[1] However, due to its sociological use, the word has since been exported into many other languages.

Each student selects their own projects and completes the program with 2 projects (which they keep). They also develop their own personal online portfolio that details their journey with videos, technical descriptions of their work, milestones, and blog postings.  This personal portfolio can then be shared with colleges and prospective employers.  Come learn more about the program!

4/24 CSU Monterey Bay College Campus Visit @ 7:30am-5:30pm: This is a small size public state university, located in Monterey.  It has strong biology, language, and business majors.  If you want to see the campus, come join us.  We would love to include seniors who have been accepted by this college but haven’t seen the campus to come with us.  Lunch will be provided.  Seats are first come first served basis.  Please pick up a field trip form from Vicki in room 209.

THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: APRIL FOOLS DAY: April Fools’ Day (sometimes called All Fools’ Day) is celebrated every year on April 1 by playing practical jokes and spreading hoaxes. The jokes and their victims are called April fools. People playing April Fool jokes expose their prank by shouting April Fool. Some newspapers, magazines, and other published media report fake stories, which are usually explained the next day or below the news section in small letters. Although popular since the 19th century, the day is not a public holiday in any country.

 

SERVICE INTERACT CLUB CAR WASH FUND RAISER:

The Service Interact Club will hold a car wash on Sunday, April 9th from 9:00am – 5:00-pm in the Faculty Parking Lot.  The funds the club earns will be donated to SHOT AT LIFE, an organization that aims to ensure that children worldwide have access to life-saving vaccines.  Please bring your vehicle for a wash on Sunday and support Service Interact and their efforts to raise funds for SHOT AT LIFE. STUDENT ID CARDS: Our Student ID Card software has been updated with the latest student pictures and is now up and running. If you know any current students or new/transfer students in need of an ID card, please direct them to Ms. Rivera in the Counseling office (258E), where our ID printer is located.

For any new/transfer students, first ID card is free of charge. All replacement ID cards will cost $2.
