THOUGHT OF THE WEEK:CINCO de MAYO: Cinco de Mayo (pronounced: [ˈsiŋko ðe ˈmaʝo]; Spanish for “Fifth of May”) is a celebration held on May 5. The date is observed to commemorate the Mexican Army‘s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza.
In the United States, Cinco de Mayo has taken on a significance beyond that in Mexico. In the U.S. the date has become associated with the celebration ofMexican-American culture. In Mexico, the commemoration of the battle continues to be mostly ceremonial, such as through military parades.
In the United States, Cinco de Mayo is sometimes mistaken to be Mexico’s Independence Day—the most important national holiday in Mexico—which is celebrated on September 16, commemorating the Cry of Dolores that initiated the war of Mexican independence from Spain.

STUDENT ID CARDS: Our Student ID Card software has been updated with the latest student pictures and is now up and running. If you know any current students or new/transfer students in need of an ID card, please direct them to Ms. Rivera in the Counseling office (258E), where our ID printer is located.
For any new/transfer students, first ID card is free of charge. All replacement ID cards will cost $2.
SEAL OF BILITERACY: Congratulations to our graduating seniors who have earned the Seal of Biliteracy for their academic achievement in two languages. Students receiving this award should have received a congratulatory letter, and will earn a special Seal on their diploma. The Seal of Biliteracy can be used to demonstrate your bilingual abilities to future employers and educational opportunities. If you think you might qualify but did not receive a letter, please see Ms. Galdamez for an application as soon as possible. Applications are due May 4th.

Summer job! The SF Maritime National Historical Park is hiring students for their summer program. You need to be between the ages 15-18 (must turn 15 by 6/29 and not turn 19 until after 8/11). This is an 8 week program from 6/19-8/11. It will be $13-$14 per hour. If interested, please pick up an application form from the College & Career Center. Application must be postmarked by 5/5.
Summer job! Student Conservation Association Summer Crew 2017 is hiring students of 15-19 years old to work outdoors. You will help maintain hiking trails and restore wildlife habitat, develop leadership skills, work with a team of peers, learn about the environment and be camping for a weekend. You must be motivated to do physical work, able to lift and swing tools, able to be outside for 8 hours a day, able to hike 30-60 minutes and willing to wear all-leather work boots, hardhats and gloves. 5/5 FRISCO Day: seniors attending a community college, military, work, or undecided after graduation will go on an ALL DAY field trip to CCSF. You
will meet at 8am in our auditorium and be bused to CCSF. If you didn’t pick up a field trip form for this, please come by the College & Career Center (RM 258F) to pick up a copy. The signed permission slip must be returned to Ms. S. Chan ASAP.
Seniors attending a 4-year after graduation will remain on campus that day. You will attend your 1,2,3,5,6th period classes (but not 4th). There will be a 4th period assembly about turning 18, financial concerns, etc. You still have to go to your 4th period class and be escorted to the auditorium by your teacher. Then during lunchtime there will be a Transition to College Fair in the courtyard.
