But from this distance you really can’t appreciate the nuances that is our “Biotech New Year’s” Door.  For instance, the mosaic on the left that say’s 2009, was made entirely from science catalogs and magazines.  The mosaic is made from the equipment and words that we use in Biotech Class.  Likewise all the cut out snow flakes and human chains are made from science catalogs as well.

Our “le piece de resistance” was that we make a double helix out of petri dishes, with “Happy New Year” spelled out in E. coli (a non-disease form HB101) spread on LB/Agar plates, we also used Klinger’s Iron plates which have a “pink” hue and cause the bacteria to show up white.  On the bottom there are plates poured with EMB agar which have snow flakes placed on them.  These were all techniques that we used for a lab a few weeks ago.

The “rungs” of the double helix were made out of the months of the year.  Surrounding the double helix were new year’s resolutions filled out by each student, combining the idea that our future is carried in our DNA…  Ok, I made that part up… but it sort of works…

The bottom of the door had a quintet of “New Year’s Glovemen.”  These guys are made out of the latx gloves wearing party hats.  These are the same gloves that we use in class, we didn’t use any outside materials.

Bottomline is, you can’t look at our door and not feel good about the future.  It’s got elements of whimsy, grossness, humor and art.  I’d have to say I’m a little surprised we got first place, but we’ll take it.

Congratulations! 

You are largest group of AP Biology students ever to take the class at Galileo.  It took a while to get back to you because I had to get approval to add a 3rd class.  We had over 110 students apply for 90 spots.  So you made it this far!

Over summer, there will be an assignment that is designed to get us all on the same page so we can get going right away in the Fall.  It shouldn’t take too long to complete, so you can do it early or right before school.  You will email it to me.

I will post the actual summer assignment SOON.  You will also be able to access the textbook online.

• You need to find an article in the newspaper or internet that has to do with a development in biology in the last week.  Article should be at least 200 words long, and no older than one week.
• Article must be printed or clipped before class begins on the day it’s due.
• Attach the following write up to the article or on the back of a printed article.
  1. Title, Date, and Author and/or Source (or website)
  2. Find a topic sentence or part of the article that summarizes the main point of the article
  3. State your opinion of the article:  what was interesting, what do you think about the topic, did you agree or disagree with the article.  (2-4 sentences)
  4. Ask the author or person in the article a question.  Think of what you would ask them if you were to meet them.
