Notes Update
October 31, 2007
A few more terms to be sure you know:
- scope
- flag
- initialize
- onClipEvent( load )
- counter
- increment / decrement
Remember, any of these are fair game for the midterm. Ask questions in class, in person, or over email. Compare notes with your friends. When in doubt, double-check with Mr. Chun!
Computer Vocabulary
October 30, 2007
This set of games is called Computer Basics because it contains the basic vocabulary you need to know. Play each game at least once! I hope that you find this an interesting way to learn. Remember today’s class is a short period, so don’t get distracted.
How Computers Work
October 29, 2007
First, read the first two pages of the article How PCs Work. Then answer the following questions:
- Which part of the computer is responsible for distributing electrical power to the other parts?
- If you want to connect a graphics card or sound card to a computer, what part do you plug it into?
- What does a CPU do?
- What is the difference between RAM and a hard drive?
- What other kinds of memory, besides RAM, does a computer have?
- What other kinds of storage, besides a hard drive, can a computer use?
- What are the main input and output devices on a computer?
- What things do you want to learn about how computers work?
Remember not to plagiarize or copy from anyone else. Email your answers to Mr. Chun and, as usual, don’t forget your name and period number.
Creating Quiz Questions
October 24, 2007
What’s the best way to study for a test? Trying to imagine the questions that might be on the test. What’s even better than that? Actually writing the questions that will be on the test. So that’s what you’re going to do today. Here’s the deal:
Your assignment today is to create a Google Document with at least 7 multiple choice questions — one dealing with each of the following topics:
- Advanced search in Google
- Determining the quality of web sites
- Online hoaxes and scams
- Plagiarism
- Phishing
- Youthline
- Galileo library catalog
I will select at least one question written by someone in each of my three Technology Orientation class periods to use on Friday’s quiz. If your questions are good enough, I reserve the right to use even more of them. So what makes a question “good”? I’m glad you asked. All of your questions should:
- Have 4 or 5 possible answers, with one and only one correct answer.
- Have the correct answer identified so I can see what you were thinking — and so that I can see that you know it.
- Be clearly focused on one of the 7 topics above.
- Not be so difficult that no one will know the answer.
- Not be so easy that anyone would know the answer without having done any work in this class.
Be sure that you put your name and period number on the Google Document, and be sure to share it with Mr. Chun!
Notes Check
October 24, 2007
I have notes shared from 15 of 28 students. This is not good! (Unless you are one of the 15, and then you got full credit for turning in your notes on time.) There was also some missing information in the notes that were shared and I commented about that. There are some group efforts on notes that I will have to discuss with you on a case-by-case basis. I will be checking notes again at the end of the day, Friday, 10/26/07.
In the long block class today, everyone must share their notes based on the Programming Vocabulary list. Your notes should be in a Google Doc. Get help from someone else if you need it! You may also want to consult the ActionScript Dictionary. Please keep your notes up to date. If you don’t have something from the most recent lessons, be sure to add it in. For example, you should all now have:
- onClipEvent
- if
- Key.getCode()
- ==
Your notes are your reference, so that you know how to get things done and remember what we learned! Keep them up and keep them useful. If you’re ready to take on our next challenge, have a look at this information on capturing keypresses.
