JavaBat

September 30, 2008

Practice makes perfect.  Or so they say.  It’s unclear who “they” are and what “perfect” means in computer science, but the spirit of the cliche makes sense: If you work on something you will improve.  So toward that end, we have JavaBat.

Mouse

September 29, 2008

Extend your interactive character to use mouse input.  Pick up MouseFunctions.pde, Mouse2D.pde, and MouseSignals.pde for examples.

Your character must have at least two different modes of mouse interaction, switchable by pressing a key or keys of your choice.

Goals:

  1. Explore different types of mouse-driven interaction.
  2. Learn about the features that processing provides to allow you to access mouse information.

Due Tuesday, 10/7/08 in class.

Persuasive PowerPoint

September 29, 2008

Create a PowerPoint presentation using the “Classic Photo Album” template to illustrate your hot paragraph.  Take your paragraph and break it up into sentences.  Put each sentence into the Notes pane of a new slide.  Your presentation should have as many slides as you have sentances in your paragraph.  Then, find an image or images to support each sentence and add them to your presentation.  You may have zero to three words per slide — no more!  Due to be presented in class on Wednesday, 10/1/08. You are doing the persuading, and the PowerPoint slides support you.

Quiz 2

September 29, 2008

Quiz 2 comes on Friday, 10/3/08 (and will be counted on the next progress report, not the one being sent this week).  Material from Labs 4 and 5, plus Chapter 2, will be covered.

Hotness

September 24, 2008

Consider the following:

Poverty is a major problem in America.  Many people are affected by poverty.  This is an important issue because it affects many people.  Poverty is the situation where people do not have enough money.  This is important to me because I think people should not have to be poor.  The president should make changes to reduce poverty.  If this happened, more people would be happier.

Versus:

It’s hard to be hungry, to wake up with the same gnawing stomach pain and light head that you went to sleep with.  Why not just eat something?  That’s easy to say when you have money.  If you haven’t experienced the feeling of looking in your pockets and not even being able to find any change, then you don’t know what it’s like to be poor.  If you haven’t been hungry, you haven’t experienced poverty.  But if you have, or you can imagine it, then you already understand why this issue is important.

Which of these is hotter?  In order to make a good presentation, you have to have a strong message.  If you don’t care about what you’re saying, your audience won’t either.  So you can fake it until you make it, or you can pick a topic that you really care about deeply.  Either way, your writing has to be hot.
