Story Maps

November 24, 2008

From the CYOA stories that you read last week, pick one that you enjoyed to use for today’s assignment. You will be making a map showing how all the pages (slides) are connected.

On a piece of paper, write:
- Your name
- The date
- Class period
- The name of the story you are mapping
- The author of that story

Then create your map. For example, here is a map of the story Third Planet from Altair and here is a map of Night of a Thousand Boyfriends. Be sure your map has a way to show where decisions are made and the various endings.

Team Game Project

November 10, 2008

Now that you have had the experience of creating a game individually, we are going to do a project that more accurately matches the game industry: Working on a team.

There are four major roles on a game development team: Designer, Artist, Programmer, and Project Manager.  Each of these jobs has specific responsibilities and it would be impossible (or too expensive and frustrating) to create a game without each of them. We will discuss these different roles in class today.

The first thing your team needs to do is review each other’s individual work.  This will help you decide on the role that each person will take.  Then, work together to pick a name for your team and think about a game concept you’d like to pursue.  Remember that this will be a web game, so hold back your awesome next-generation console game ideas. You have a team of four. Complete the Team Game Project worksheet and turn it in by the end of class.

Good vs Evil

November 10, 2008

There is a timeless struggle between the powers of good and evil, and you are now a part of it.
  1. Pick one of these two articles to read: What is Good PowerPoint Design? or Really Bad PowerPoint. As you read, notice the criteria the author gives that will help you evaluate a presentation.
  2. Use Google’s Advanced Search “File type” setting to find a PowerPoint presentation about a topic of your choice. (Learn about the Advanced Search form if you don’t know about it already.)
  3. Download the PowerPoint, and run it (F5).
  4. As you click through, evaluate the presentation according to the criteria in the article you read.
  5. Send an email to Mr. Chun stating:
    • the title and author of the article you read
    • the criteria given in this article for evaluating a PowerPoint
    • what you learned from reading the article (be specific)
    • the URL of the PowerPoint you found using Google
    • your analysis of that PowerPoint — based on the article you read!
