Matters of Life and Death Writing Contest

Compassion & Choices of Northern California

3701 Sacramento Street, #439

San Francisco, CA 94118

Writing Prompts:

  • Why should California legalize the right for terminally-ill patients to end their lives in a humane and dignified matter?  You may want to reference Oregon’s Death with Dignity Act or Washington State’s newly passed Aid in Dying measure, to obtain a physician’s prescription to end life.
  • How has your personal experience shaped your views on aid-in-dying?  Did you, a family member, or a friend experience an illness that has since made you think about choice at the end of life?
  • Put yourself in the place of one of the following “characters” in a scenario involving someone who is terminally-ill and considering aid-in-dying: the terminally-ill patient, a family member, a doctor, and/or a member of the clergy.  Help us understand their viewpoints and what they take into consideration while facing this issue.

Prizes will be awarded: $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place, and $250 for Honorable mention and will be judged on originality of thought.
