INTRODUCTION: bridges Multicultural and Resource Center was created in response to Prop 209 which passed in CA in 1996 that led to a drop in the representation of students of color on the UC Berkeley campus. The purpose of bridges is to outreach to students of color throughout CA who lack resources in their schools and to give them guidance towards higher education. bridges also works to mobilize students in order to create a movement to change policies such as Prop. 209. This booklet has been created to give students the resources and information needed in order to reach the goal of higher education. It includes information on requirements that UC and Cal State schools expect in order to be considered for admissions.

What is Prop 209? Prop 209 is an amendment to CA’s constitution passed by the voters that ended the consideration of race, gender, ethnicity, or national origin in school admissions (including UC’s) and in state employment and contracting.

1. Educational Pipeline:

The Educational Pipeline is a pathway that all California students go through in order to gain the level of higher education desired. But because of unequal funding and policies like Prop 209, there are leaks in the pipeline that leave students of color behind. Below are those leaks to the pipeline:
