Socially Conscious Music Assignment

This assignment explores how popular musicians from all eras address or make reference to social justices, social injustice and public health. These song are referred to as socially conscious songs. You can find socially conscious songs in the music of our contemporaries and in the music of the past. Many communities use music as a means to communicate, reflect or address problems and concerns. Perhaps you are aware of a few.

Guidelines:

  1.  Do not select a song that your classmates are using.
  2. Find a song that has lyrics that address a social justice issue.
  3.  Copy the lyrics – type them out or cut and past.
  4.   Write an insightful one page analysis about why you think this song addresses an important social justice issue, what the artist is saying (message), why you think it is important, what symbols did the artist use to convey the message?
  5.  If your song is selected, be prepared to introduce the song and what it means.

***** Songs must not glorify violence, consumerism or sexism. Songs cannot objectify women or any other person in any way. Songs must not belittle or prejudge groups of people. Cursing is acceptable in the art of the song as long as it is not gratuitous.

  1. To reinforce what you have learned in your EMT class.
  2. To give you an opportunity to learn a skill/s.
  3. To give you an opportunity to practice skills.
  4. To work with a classmate that you might not work with on a regular bases.

 

GOALS

 

  1. To work together as a team to support learning. Some of you might be experts at doing a particular skill, others in your team might not be. Please help each other learn and gain mastery of the skill.
  2. Identify what is being asked of your team and as a team pool your resources to complete the skill.
  3. Complete the skill without error. Errors will result in do overs and poor patient health in the future.
  4. Leave your area clean and the supplies put away neatly.

 

RUBRIC

 

To receive your points for the day the following must be completed each skill flawlessly. Rely on your team members for quality control. Use your book and/or computer as a resource for quality control.

  1. Each skill needs to be demonstrated correctly.
  2. Each skill needs to be documented clearly using the correct media – video, photo, interactive quiz, etc.
  3. The media must be viewable and understandable
  4. At least three skills must be accomplished a day.
  5. QR Codes must be very small and appropriately titled. See example below
  6. Wait till you have at least three QR codes before you print. Ask Mr. McDowell about using recycled paper.
  7. Your poster needs to be kept neat, clean and wrinkle free.

RULES

 

It is up to every member on your team to keep track of each other. Don’t let your partner jeopardize your points.

 

  1. Everybody must participates. Take turns demonstrating the skills. A different person should be on each video. You must take turns.
