Cook Off 2018

Hello Cookers,

Next Monday is an important day for four reasons.

  1. Chef Kevin and Chef Shane will be joining us.
  2. The Culinary Director of Williams and Sonoma will also be joining us. S/He will be one of the judges.
  3. There will most likely be a few other people that will also be judges.
  4. Keep this on “The Low Down.” There will also be a funder joining us. Our objective, other than beating Burton is to help raise money for the great organization “The American Heart Association.”

We need to be professional. That means:

  1. Be on time.
  2. Come with a growth mindset
  3. Professional cooks don’t even get this opportunity so we have to represent. Keep the play and volume to a minimum.
  4. Ask lots of question.
  5. Enjoy the attention you are getting from some very heavy hitter (important people).

You were selected because I believe in you and we enjoy your company as learners. Lets Do this.

Immune System Study Guide

Innate Immune System

  1. You should be prepared to describe the Inflammation Response and the cells involved.
  2. You should be prepared to describe the role of the “Innate Immune System” (non-specific). This should include what happens when there is an infection, the role of Mast and Dendritic Cells on through to the migration of the granulocytes to the point of infection. You should be prepared to describe the role of Macrophages, and Natural Killer Cells as well.
  3. You should be prepared to list the cells that release heparin and histamines and what affect of those two chemicals have on the point of infection.
  4. You should be able to identify the two cells we covered that engulf substances through phagocytosis.
  5. You should be prepare to identify the primary cell that crosses over from the Innate immune system through circulatory and lymphatic system to trigger the Adaptive Immune System.
  6. You should know the two categories/branches that make up the Adaptive Immune System and generally what each branch does.
  7. You should know at least three out of four of the pathogen categories.
  8. Be prepared to list at least four effects of Interleukins.
  9. You should be prepared to express where memory cells within our immune system come from.

Resources available to you include your blue book, your notes, your cell phones and a laptop. Please note that often times our laptops have problems logging on, getting on line, etc. Do not count on the laptop. If it works it works, if it doesn’t, it doesn’t, your other resources should suffice.

Summer Internship Information

Hello CPMC Internship Applicants,

I was provided with a list of this Year’s Summer interns (2018). The hospital was very impressed by all of the applicants and if they had more positions available, they would have selected all of you. There are 20 intern positions and there were 30 applicants. If you were not selected, know you did a wonderful job but there were not enough spots for everybody. If you were selected, please be sensitive towards those that were not.

If you were not selected, please know that Andy and I are committed to working with you on trying to finding an internship somewhere in the city. Please consider yourself an alternate in case someone on this list cannot participate. Return your focus to the Productive Summer Log with lists of opportunities on the GHA Web Page.

If you are on this list and you cannot participate, let me know immediately so I can work with the hospital on selecting an alternate. It is the hospital’s choice on selecting the alternate.

Please note the following conditions that would exclude you from the internship.

  1. You cannot be enrolled in Summer school.
  2. You must abide by the CPMC Internship schedule.
  3. You must commit for the whole internship and represent not only yourself, but the Galileo Health Academy and me.
  4. You must abide by the CPMC/Sutter Health code of conduct and expectations as well as the Internship expectations.
  5. You must approach this experience with a growth mindset.

If you are unable to meet any of the above-mentioned requirements please let me know immediately.

Lastly, I am proud of all of the applicants for many reasons. Great work to all of you. I will be counting on the interns to do a variety of activities and to provide support next school year. If you  are an intern, and you have a free period next school year I expect your support as a TA.

Galileo Health Academy Legislation Day in Sacramento

 

Overview:

Juniors in the Galileo Health Academy will travel to Sacramento on March 14th to advocate for health legislation that is promoted by the American Heart Association. The legislation is designed to make our California communities healthier. Over the last ten years GHA students were instrumental in passing bills into law that provide 500 million dollars to Physical Education programs in California schools, require hospitals to test newborn babies for a fatal heart disease, and the passing of California’s landmark 2016 Tobacco Prevention Policies, along with many other bills. Students use the professionalism skills developed in their health academy class, communication skills developed in English and their knowledge of the health bills they are promoting to become the change agent working to make California healthier for everybody.

 

Bills:

More information will be provided as we move closer to the March 14th trip. This year we will be advocating for the following bills.

  1. A bill that requires milk or water as an option in all kids meals from restaurants.
  2. Funding for a Hypertension (high blood pressure) prevention program
  3. Resources for childcare programs that establish standards for:
    1. Physical activity
    2. Screen time standards
    3. Nutrition standards.

 

Logistics:

Please read the following carefully:

  1. We will be pulling away from the curb at 7:30am We need to leave at this time to arrive on time and to avoid the morning traffic log jam. By leaving at 7:30 we decrease the chance of sitting in traffic for 2 hours. Arrive by 7:00am
  2. We are scheduled to return by 4:30pm. There is always a chance we could get stuck in traffic. If you work that day, anticipate the possibility of a delay and plan accordingly.
  3. The AHA will provide a morning snack when we arrive and they will provide a lunch.
  4. Dress professionally. You will be interacting with the most powerful people in California trying to convince them of the merits of a bill. You need to come across as professional.
  5. It might be cold or it might be hot. It is usually warm. Bring a jacket incase it is cold.
  6. When we arrive in Sacramento you will have the opportunity to use the bathroom in the capital building before our program begins. Do this immediately upon arrival because it takes time to get through security to use the bathroom.
  7. Leave your phone on and on vibrate the whole day. We need to be able to find you on a moments notice and you don’t want your phone to go off when you are talking with a senator.

 

I am excited about our trip. It is a unique opportunity to bring about positive change. You can also put this on your resume and personal statement. It looks really good to have the following in your resume:

 

“I advocated for health legislation at the Sacramento State Capital on behalf of the American Heart Association to make California healthier for all.”

 

And if the bill passes, you can say:

 

The bills we passed established health standards in daycare centers.

The bills we passed established programs that addressed Hypertension.

The bills we passed require restaurants to offer milk and water as choices in their kids meals.

Hello Students,

Please do the “Magnet Word” exercise on this article. Don’t know what the “Magnet Word” exercise is. Then follow the directions below. Learning how to do this will make writing much easier when you go to college – so put a real effort into it. It will pay off.
1. Copy the assigned article onto a word document.
2. Slowly read the article for understanding. Take your time and really try to understand what is being conveyed.
3. Reread the article, but this time use the “highlight” feature highlight your magnet words.
      *What are magnet words? Magnet words are words that you believe the author is selecting to use to convey meaning. It is subjective. Words like “but, then, the, and” are certainly not magnet words. Look for words you believe the author is selecting when trying to get the message across. Everybody is different so expect to have several different magnet words that your classmates.
4. Aggregate all the magnet words in a list below the article that contains the highlighted words.
5. Now, rewrite the article in your own words. As you rewrite the article, integrate all of the magnet words. You will find this makes rewriting the article in your own words much much easier. Remember, you must use all magnet words. Also, and this is important… Do not plagiarize.
