ELD VII/VIII

     ELD VII/VIII is advanced English development.   It helps students develop listening, speaking, reading, writing, structure and critical thinking skills.  Life skills, study skills and library skills are also acquired  in the course of study.

     Students’ activities will be focused on their oral and written communications.  Short stories, poetry, drama and essays are introduced to students while studying American and world literature.  Their writing assignments are based on the genres they have studied.  Students are required to write with good grammar and correct punctuation.

     In literature, students will learn the difference between literal and figurative language.  Elements covered in figurative language are similes, metaphors, personifications, hyperboles, onomatopoeia and idioms.  They also study different styles of writing, e.g., flashback, suspense, foreshadowing and so on.  Elements of literature such as setting, character, plot, conflict, mood, suspense, climax, resolution, and theme are also introduced.  In the meantime, students learn language structures such as parts of speech, linking verbs, transitive and intransitive verbs, prepositional phrases, infinitive phrases, gerund phrases, participial phrases, appositive phrases, independent and subordinate clauses, direct and indirect speeches, active and passive voice; conditions.

     Activities:     Lectures followed by discussions

                        Group projects with cooperative learning and peer editing

Mandarin I/II

Chinese Mandarin I / II is a class for beginning students. Lessons are taught from the given textbook. Students are to learn pinyin and Han characters. The purpose of the course is to introduce the Chinese language as well as some of the Chinese culture. Students learn to listen, speak, read and write Chinese at the beginning level.

The major topics covered in the course are meeting people, family, classroom and daily routine. The course also covers vocabulary used in daily conversation, types of questions, the usage of bu, mei, dou, hen,, keshi, jiao, wen, nei, shei, youde, shenme, and zhidao buzhidao; numbers.

                Practicing Chinese penmanship

                Writing sentences and paragraphs in pinyin and characters.

Mandarin III/IV

     Mandarin III/ IV is for intermediate students.  They continue to learn pinyin and characters at the intermediate level.  The purpose of the course is to continue to introduce the Chinese language as well as some of the Chinese culture.  They learn to listen, speak, read and write Chinese at the intermediate level.

     The major topics covered in the course are hobbies, clothing, school, favorite classes and activities.

     Activities:  Lectures followed by discussions

                      Group projects with cooperative learning

                      Practicing Chinese penmanship, writing paragraphs and journals in pinyin and charactersŠ

Mandarin V/VI

              Mandarin 5/6 and Honors are for high intermediate students.  They learn to speak, read, and write Chinese at the high intermediate level.  In addition to the textbook, students also receive supplementary materials to enrich their reading and writing in Chinese.  They continue to learn pinyin and Chinese vocabulary at the high intermediate level.

The major topics covered are Chinese holidays, cinema, shopping, health, and entertainment.
