Expectations

To create a pleasant and productive learning and teaching environment for all students and to foster mutual respect for each other, each student will abide by the following rules:

1. To behave courteously and respectfully at all times.
Raise your hand before answering or asking a question.
No disruptive behavior: Calling out, or being disrespectful to the teacher or one another.
2. Remain in your seats at all times during instruction.
Consequences for misbehaviors are as follows:
1st time,warning. 2nd time, call home. 3rd time, referral. More than 3 times, onsite conference with parent and or suspension from class.
3. Arrive in class on time and be prepared with all necessary materials such as your book, binder and writing materials.
(Tardy and unprepared students will lose daily points)
Students are expected to be in their assigned seats when the bell rings!
4. No gum chewing or eating during instruction time.
5. Follow all school rules as stated in the Student Handbook.

Daily Classroom procedures

1. Students will take daily notes and keep an organized on inch binder divided into four sections 1. Vocabulary 2. Notes 3. Class activities 4. Tests (Instructions will be given on how to do this)
A neat and organized binder will help students remain on task and help them achieve a good grade. Binders will be checked regularly,
2. All missed written assignments due to excused absences must be made up in a timely manner.
Oral work cannot be “made up”.
(In certain circumstances extra credit can be earned)

4. Weekly calendars will be kept in the binders by each
student . Calendars will be turned in once a week and will count as the weekly grade. (Instruction will be given regarding this task.

Grading and Homework Policy

There will be a daily homework assignment written or oral. Each lesson should be reviewed by the student each night for at least 20 to 30 minutes to enhance learning and to be successful. Each assignment will be given a point value and will be checked the following class period.
Grades are based on a point system to be averaged and totaled from the following:
a. Class work - written and oral assignments. (35%)
b. Quizzes on lesson content both oral and written. ( 35%)
c. Class participation & Oral proficiency ( 30%)

Semester grades will also include:
Midterm and Final Exams. (Dates will be announced)
Final semester grades will include one or two term projects. (Except for French 1 first semester)
Details and dates will be announced. You will have ample time to do these both in class and as homework assignments.

Grade Scale: 100-90=A 89-80 =B 79-70=C 69- 60= D

Students who are not maintaining a C or better grade will be notified before the end of the grading period

It is the right of every student to learn and to perform to the best of his or her ability. I, as the teacher, will provide the environment and materials for learning and I will help my students be successful .

SYLLABUS FOR THIRD YEAR FRENCH ( French 5/6 Intermediate level )
 Advanced Level  French 7/8

Third year  and fourth year French is a comprehensive course in the study of French language, literature, culture and history of the French language and of Francophone countries.
This course will build on the knowledge the student acquired in the first 2 years of study.

This course will include:

1) Oral expression and proficiency using tapescripts and real dialogues for use in everyday communicative activities such as buying a train ticket, ordering food in a restaurant, shopping for various items and general communication. It will also give students an introduction to getting oriented in a Francophone country.

2) Written proficiency and expression e.g. being able to write a letter to state a basic need or problem, basic composition skills to be able to comment on pieces of reading of both on culture and passages of literature
Grammar and syntax will be incorporated in the curriculum for better  written and oral expression.

3) Reading proficiency using literature based reading assignment and realia such as current newspapers and     magazines from France and francophone countries.

4) Culture and History will also be included in the study of     the language as a basis for reading improvement and a better understanding of the culture in general.

Modalities used for teaching:

1) Use of computer Lab for project based learning using Internet access and addresses worldwide.

2) Visual Modalities. Viewing of films commenting and discussions.

3) Use of magazines in the target language

4) Language Lab on site will be used to review and reinforce the lessons covered in the textbook. This will help students with pronunciation, vocabulary reviews and grammar related to verbal structures and syntax.

Assessment:

Assessment of students’ learning will be done on an on-going basis using both oral and written evaluations.
Students will write and performing of original dialogues. Comment on daily activites, ask each other questions relating to their social and school activities as well as practice the language of the themes being learned.

There will be group projects using skills and students will demonstrate what they have learned. Exams will be given every 6 weeks and may be substituted with a comprehensive term project.

Texts and materials will include but will not be limited to the following:

Glencoe Bon Voyage, 2003 edition
Original newspapers, magazines, videos and computer programs.

This is a comprehensive course in Intermediate French which continues
to expand and build on the students’ knowledge of the language by
continuing to focus on:

1.  Oral communication skills which include speaking with
       the proper pronunciation and being able to respond
   to  questions as well a formulating questions and
   dialogues by interacting with classmates.
2. Verbal skills including grammar. Students will review theÂ
   present tense as well as learn the past and near future tense and be
   able to incorporate these in the spoken language. Syntax and
   grammatical as well as    idiomatic structures will be
   learned and practiced in context of every day language.
3. Vocabulary building will be expanded from 500 to 1500 approach to
   expand students’ knowledge of art,  literature and  every day
   living in France and Francophone countries around the world.

Students will learn using various modalities including:

1.  Oral repetition with teacher models and tapes with native speakers.
2.  Tape scripts and listening comprehension, songs and poems
3.  Dialogues with partners with audio models.
4.  Group projects based on culture, grammar and vocabulary.
5.  Video programs to learn culture and reinforce learning of  the target language.
6.  Computer software programs when available at the intermediate level to function as a language lab.

other students and to be in touch with the Francophone world

curriculum will also be aligned with the SFUSD standards for foreign
language.

Language Lab on site will be used to review lessons and to help student who need additional reinforcement both written and oral

First year French is a comprehensive course at the beginning level which
includes teaching and learning of basic expressions and vocabulary
needed to function in the French Language.

Foreign Language Standards of Listening ,Speaking, Reading and Writing are followed and included in the course.

 

This course will include the following:

1. Oral communication with use of basic expressions of everyday
   conversation at the beginning level including speaking with accurate
   pronunciation. Students will be able to introduce themselves, ask for
   information and learn basic verbal skills which include building of vocabulary (300 to 500 words)  incorporating verbal structures into oral and written communication.
2. Basic Grammar such as conjugation of regular and irregular verbs
   in the present tense . Basic syntax and structure to reinforce speaking
   abilities
3. Reading comprehension activities to reinforce basic literacy.
4. Culture of Francophone countries around the world are introduced within lesson content as a thematic component of the course.

Students will learn using various modalities including:

1. Oral repetition including modeling by teacher
2. Tape scripts with listening comprehension. Communicative
   activities which practice and reinforce structures
   learned from lesson content.
3. Simple dialogues such as introductions. asking and giving information.
4. Group projects based on culture, grammar and vocabulary.
5. Video programs to reinforce language and learn culture.
6. Computer software when available at the beginning level.
7. Use of language laboratory.

Evaluation of students will be done on an on-going basis and will
consist of:
1) Assessing students’ oral skills and communication abilities.
2) Written tests evaluating comprehension and application of grammatical
structures and written abilities. Writing letters. postcards to a
friend and establishing a shopping list.
3) Reading comprehension in content area will also be assessed.

Glencoe French 1, Bienvenue 1998 edition. Glencoe  Bon Voyage  French 2003 edition.
Additional materials will also be used to support learning . These include magazines, videos and computer programs.

    I am  Madame Le Biavant, the  one and
only French teacher at Galileo. I teach all the wonderful classes here
and I love working with our students who are ready and eager to learn
French. I have been teaching for over 25 years, 10 years at
Galileo. 
I believe French is a useful and beautiful language and my students
will learn to appreciate and love it as they learn it. I speak French
fluently.
 I  am married and  I
have  four children one daughter and three sons who are fluent in
French. I was born in Switzerland, I have lived  in Switzerland,
France and  West Africa ( 2 years in the Peace Corps). I have
lived in San Francisco for 26 years.
I will continue teaching at Galileo and enjoying it.
