The Princess Project

Princess Project is a non-profit organization that provides free dresses and accessories to Bay Area high school girls who could not otherwise afford prom.

Who can participate?

The Princess Project has FREE, beautiful dresses and accessories for Bay Area girls who would otherwise miss out on prom due to expenses. Girls determine their own financial need.

All girls will receive a wristband with an appointment time. The line to get a wristband opens at 7am; we cannot allow girls to line up prior to this. Wristbands are given on a first-come, first-served basis, and will be distributed until appointment times run out.

What are the rules?

  • Each girl MUST bring her valid Bay Area high school ID. If your school does not issue an ID, please bring a recent report card or other official documentation, along with a picture ID.
  • Dresses will be replenished, both days, throughout the event – so there will be plenty to choose from!
  • Each girl is allowed to receive ONE dress, plus one accessory.
  • Each girl may bring one additional female guest (parent or friend) to help her shop.
  • An adult cannot shop for a girl unless that girl is present.

Advanced registration is not required

Introductory College Level Experience in Microbiology (iCLEM)

The Introductory College Level Experience in Microbiology (iCLEM) program is an 8-week paid research internship program for exceptionally motivated high school sophomores and juniors with an interest in biotechnology. The program takes place at the Joint BioEnergy Institute in Emeryville from June 21 through August 11, 2011. Applications for summer 2011 will be accepted between January 31 and March 1. The application deadline is March 1. Please announce this opportunity to your students, and feel free to forward this email to your fellow teachers.

Program Description: iCLEM teaches basic lab and research skills and provides students with experience working on a bioenergy research project in a state-of-the-art molecular biology lab. The teaching staff includes two scientists and two high school science teachers. In addition to basic science and research, the program also exposes students to career exploration and college preparation including field trips to a local biotech companies, career talks with scientists, help and guidance on writing a college statement of purpose, meeting with a UC Berkeley admissions officer, and visits to college campuses. Students are paid a stipend of $1500 plus a scholarship of $500 upon successful completion of the program.

Program dates & location: iCLEM begins on Tuesday, June 21 and ends on Thursday, August 11, 2011. Work hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Students must commit to full time work for all eight weeks of the program. The location of the lab is 5885 Hollis Street, Emeryville, CA 94608. The site can be easily reached by free shuttle bus from MacArthur BART.

Eligibility criteria: Students must be sophomores and juniors currently enrolled in high school in Alameda, San Francisco or Contra Costa counties. We seek students from disadvantaged social/financial backgrounds for whom this opportunity would make a critical difference in their lives. Students’ household incomes must be $60,000 or below. Participating students typically have taken Algebra 1 and basic high school biology. Such coursework is not a requirement for admission and may be waived for students who show exceptional motivation. Students who are willing to work hard, come to work every day, ask questions, and talk to an instructor when they need help will thrive in this program.
