Environmental Science – Analysis of Greenhouse Effect Activity
January 30, 2009
Data Analysis:
Create a Graph using Excel.
Open an Excel document.
In column A enter the minutes (do NOT type any words or letters; just type numbers).
In column B enter the Temperature of the Uncovered Jar (do NOT type any words or letters).
In column C enter the Temperature of the Covered Jar (do NOT type any words or letters).
Highlight all your data.Â
Pull down Insert menu and select Chart.
Choose XY (Scatter).
Click Next and Next again.
In Chart Title, type your name and “Greenhouse Effect”. In x-axis type Time in Minutes. In y-axis type Temperature in Celsius. Click Next.
Select As New Sheet and then Finish and then Print. Cut the edges off of your graph and tape it or glue it in the next blank page in the front of your notebook.
Questions (to be answered in your notebook; you do NOT need to copy the questions):
1. Which of these jars is the greenhouse model and which is the control?
2. What is the purpose of the control?
3. We are trying to answer the question: What is the effect of Earth’s atmosphere on its temperature? What material was modeling the Earth’s atmosphere? Describe one way that our experiment accurately modeled the Earth and its atmosphere and two ways in which it did not.
4. Which part of our data (0-20 minutes or 20-60 minutes) should we focusing on to answer the experimental question? What was happening to many of the bottles during the first 20 mintues?
5. Subtract your uncovered bottle temperature at 20 minutes from the temperature at 50 or 60 minutes (whenever your group finished). Then do the same for the covered bottle. Which one had a greater increase over time? Why? Use Figure 7-12 page 181 to support your answer.
6. If we imagine Earth to be like this bottle, then we can also imagine that humans are causing global warming/global climate change by adding another layer of ________________ __________ to the bottle. List 2 human activities that are contributing to global warming/global climate change (look at page 183 if you don’t know already).
