Holiday Homework

December 13, 2007

Stat-yous,
Since it’s been a long time since Chapter 5 and since I want to keep your stats brains nimble through out the Holiday.  I’d like you to complete the following assignment : Holiday Homework - “This American Life:  What’s in a Number”

I hope you find it somewhat interesting.  I want you focus on the statistics involved, but if you do that adequately, I’d also like to hear about your political views about the topic, data and findings.

Enjoy your Holiday, and contact me if you have any issues or problems.

Holiday Homework - “What’s in a Number’ - due January 4th

December 13, 2007

This assignment is not like most of your math assignments. In this assignment, the point value of your grade is not predetermined and I have not developed a rubric. Your grade, like most of life’s activities, will be determined by the effort, detail and completeness of your report and analysis. I will only take typed documents. While I do not want to specific page length, because some of you will try to fill the required number with excess “blather”. Without giving a minimum, anything less than 2 full 1.5 spaced pages is likely to be far short of expectations (I do not consider charts, pages, and bibliography as part of those 2 pages. However, I completely encourage the use of charts data or any other analysis you may want to generate). It is acceptable to discuss this assignment, details, and content with other AP Stats students. However, your report must be completely your own. Any discernible “borrowing”, “lifting”, “sharing” or other forms of plagiarism will be severely punished.

What do you need to do?

  • Review chapter 5 (especially about the concepts of biases and designing studies)

    1. You may also want to visit the AP Test Prep section of this site and review the “Producing Data -notes under Chapter 5″.

    2. Make sure your familiar (again) with the concepts in that chapter)

    1. You may download it from this site ($0.95) - requires an MP3 Player. It’s also available from other sites like audible.com,

    2. You can listen to it directly from your computer (free) - requires no software or hardware

    3. Remember, you can pause it and take notes while you listen

    4. You can download a copy of the original Original Lancet Study (2004) here or the New Lancet Study (2006) here

    5. You can find Iraqi Body Count’s response to the 2006 Lancet Study here
  • Write a report / analysis / reflection on this program

    • DO NOT SIMPLY ANSWER EACH OF THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS
    • These questions are only to seed your thoughts for your analysis
    1. Focus on the statistics involved with this report and the program

    2. What parts of the sampling process supported what we discussed in class?

    3. What did you find impressive about their approach and process?

    4. What issues or aspects of their sample design / analysis did you have questions about?

    5. Do you think there may have been any significant biases that they missed?

    6. What do you think about The Iraqi Body Count (www.iraqbodycount.net) findings using morgue and hospital data?

      • Where are the biases in their findings?

      • Where are the holes in their analysis?

    7. Which of the two findings do you think is better or has the more accurate numbers?

    8. Whichever one you think is better, how can you justify the dramatic difference in the numbers of deaths and casualities?

  • Due Date: Class time on Friday, January 4th - No extensions, No partial credit for late work
