Parabola Lab or Pa”lab”ora
March 27, 2009
This will be a test to see how well you function in the computer lab. If you “working” on websites or applications that are not specified in this lab. Then your lab will be over and you will stare at a blank screen!
In this lab you will work on two different activities using applets and completing questions
Activity 1: Equations of a parabola (review)
This is a quick activity to find the equation of a parabola and get a better understanding the parabola changes with changing the different parts of the equation. Read the instruction before you load the applet and start clicking!
I want you to duplicate at least 8 parabolas in the applet. You do this by clicking the “new parabola” button and adjusting the sliders until your parabola matches the given parabola.
Click Here: Finding the equation of a parabola Lab
Challenge: now that you’ve done 8 parabolas, try the same process a few times with only adjusting each slider ONE time. No second adjustments. See if you can do this three times in a row.
Click here and answer the questions.
Activity 2: Definition of a parabola
In this activity you get a better feeling for what a parabola is (hopefully). Be patient, it can be a little challenging to get accurate results. READ the instructions before your get started.
Click here: Construct a Parabola Lab
Drag and move the point M until the line segments are the same length, then click the “plot points” button. Do the same process until you have 8 points plotted.
DO NOT click the “plot/delete parabola” button until you’ve plotted at least 8 points (four above the axis of symmetry and 4 below).
Now click the “plot/delete parabola” button and see if your parabola goes through your points.
Let me know when you’ve answered the online questions. If you finish early, explore more about parabolas and parabolic antennas.
